The longstanding relationship between the City of San Luis Obispo and nearby university Cal Poly is dynamic.

Cal Poly is a major contributor to the community's vibrancy and culture and is a major economic engine on California’s Central Coast, according to a recent report by REACH that assessed the economic impact of Cal Poly. However, some residents have voiced concerns over noise, unruly gatherings, and other disturbances in neighborhoods surrounding Cal Poly. The City recognizes that these issues have led to tensions between some long-term residents and some members of the Cal Poly student community.

For its part, the City has a long history of innovative approaches to addressing neighborhood wellness – including in neighborhoods surrounding Cal Poly's campus – and we will continue to work with our community to maintain and improve our neighborhoods. This requires everyone to do their part, work together, and abide by the laws our community has in place.

Our balanced approach includes education, collaboration, and law enforcement and we are proud to have a demonstrated history of using constructive feedback to identify areas of concern and respond to issues as they arise.
