- I’m interested in volunteering with the City of SLO… how do I get started?
Active volunteer opportunities are listed on the City’s volunteer portal, Engage SLO.- New volunteers are invited to create an account by answering a few questions, confirming their emergency contact information, and submitting a volunteer waiver.
- Once you have completed step 1, log back into your account after 24 hours Monday – Friday and find opportunity that interests you. Our City staff will be in touch along the way and send you final details before your first shift.
- How do I learn about upcoming needs to volunteer?
The best way to stay connected to the City of SLO’s Volunteer Program is to create an account on Engage SLO and click Causes and Skills that interest you. As more opportunities that match your interests are added the portal will automatically notify you. Simply log in and hit respond to those opportunities for which you’re available.

What do volunteers generally do?
Whether you’re serving for a day or have a regular, on-going, shift, all service opportunities advance the City’s Major City Goals, support staff work projects and most are performed alongside City team members. From tree planting to downtown clean ups, public art maintenance, administrative help, park and pathway adoptions to community garden service days, building and caring for open space trail systems, supporting events, or activities and programs at one of the City’s facilities. There area diverse, inclusive and accessible opportunities for all community members to get involved in serving their community. -
What’s the minimum age to volunteer?
For most volunteer opportunities
- Those under 16 years of age are required to have a parent or legal guardian present for the duration of a shift after the Volunteer Waiver for Minors is submitted.
- Anyone ages 16 and 17 can volunteer without a parent or legal guardian present after the Volunteer Waiver for Minors is submitted. -
What is the minimum time commitment to volunteer?
Service opportunities range from a single day to long-term and ongoing regular shifts. Read the opportunity’s description on the volunteer portal for more information. -
