Part of that includes creating volunteer opportunities for those who are called to serve their community.

To find the right volunteer opportunity for you:

1. Consider your interests.

   What do you enjoy doing? The opportunities that match your interests are the most likely to be fun and sustainable. The City’s volunteer portal allows you to filter volunteer opportunities based on the cause you care most about – from public art to open space trail maintenance, tree planting to downtown and neighborhood cleanups -  there are volunteer opportunities in the City for every area of interest.  Have a special skill or area of expertise? Contact our Volunteer Program to see if a Specialist Volunteer role is of need. This could be photography, videography, translation or interpretation skills, and more!

2. Define your volunteering goals.

   Think about why you want to volunteer. Do you want to improve your neighborhood? Do you want to try something new? Are you looking to do something rewarding with your spare time? Do you care about your community’s park and have interest in adopting it? The opportunities that match your goals are likely to be the most fulfilling.

3. Consider different types of organizations or roles.

   There are so many ways to serve, even if you don’t choose a volunteer opportunity with the City of SLO. Do a bit of research about which organizations near you that have volunteer opportunities and what kinds of roles they offer. You could look at their website, volunteer portal, visit their offices or location, or even give them a call to find out if it could be the right fit for you.

4. Consider how much time you have.
   Volunteering does not have to be a huge time commitment to be fulfilling. Sometimes, just one to two hours per week can provide the most benefits. Be sure to volunteer only the amount of time that feels comfortable for you and remember that many organizations that rely on volunteers ask for a minimum time commitment as there’s often training and orientation involved. Be realistic about your expectations and if you need community service hours for school, start looking (and serving!) sooner than later.

Engage SLO is the City's online volunteer portal aimed at connecting passionate community members with meaningful volunteer opportunities to contribute to the betterment of our community. 

Creating an account gives you the opportunity to easily view and sign up for volunteer roles, manage your volunteer schedule, track your hours / contribution, and access valuable resources.

How to volunteer with the City:

1. Create a free and data-safe account by completing a few onboarding questions at volunteer.slocity.org/user/register.
2. Select your t-shirt size and indicate if you have court-ordered community service.
3. Set up your profile and select your preferred causes and identify your skills.
4. Find and respond to volunteer opportunities listed on the Engage SLO portal. Be sure to submit requested qualifications like the required Volunteer Waiver and Emergency Contact Information.
5. Show up, have fun, and complete your service!
6. Log your hours on the Engage SLO portal.
