Have you ever discovered a leak days or even weeks after it started? The City of SLO is launching digital meters using AMI technology as a solution to help you catch leaks faster and keep your water bill from unwanted spikes.

The replacement of all water metering infrastructure is underway for residences and businesses throughout the City. We have been transitioning 16,000+ mechanical water meters to highly sensitive digital water meters that are compatible with state-of-the-art AMI technology. This technology will improve your customer experience and empower you to monitor your personal water use.

What is AMI?

AMI, or Advanced Metering Infrastructure, is a network of smart water meters and communications used to provide real-time usage water use data directly to the customer. With this system, our team of Water Resources and Utility Billing staff can be alerted to water leaks and water meter functionality as well as enhance your customer service experience related to leak identification and utility billing.

How it works

AMI uses wireless cellular communication to send and receive water use data at set times throughout the day. The data is then visible on an online platform where to-the-minute water use can be examined through the web browser or phone application. AMI will replace the City’s current process of monthly manual meter reads, and give you access to your water use with customized leak notifications.

Sustainable SLO

In accordance with the City’s goal of moving towards carbon neutrality, meter reads for properties with an active AMI device will be collected remotely, reducing the need for in-person meter reading. This will result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions by limiting the number of vehicle trips to your property to physically read your water meter each month.

Download the EyeOnWater app or navigate to eyeonwater.com/signup.
Enter your account number located on your water bill (exclude dashes) and your service address ZIP Code.
Enter your email address and create a password. This will be your EyeOnWater log in!
You will receive a confirmation email from Badger Meter, Inc. to verify your email address by clicking on the link in the confirmation email.
Sign in using your email and password.
You are now ready to monitor your water use! Set up leak alerts, thresholds and learn when you use water the most!

Can I monitor my water use without downloading an app?

Yes, you can alternatively sign up and view your customer portal on a web browser where you can set up email and text message notifications.
Will the City help me sign up for EyeOnWater?

Yes, call the Utilities Department at 805-781-7133 to get assistance with creating an EyeOnWater portal account.
Will the City notify me of water leaks?

With your customer portal, we encourage you to set leak identification thresholds that match your property's water use pattern. The City will be alerted to large leaks and irregular usage and provide notification to you when appropriate.
Can I request my current water meter to be retrofitted with AMI?

No, the City will be rolling out AMI in specific areas on an ongoing basis. We will not install AMI outside of planned areas, however every water meter within San Luis Obispo will be upgraded to AMI.
Can I still use my Flume device with a digital water meter and AMI device?

No, Flume devices are not compatible with digital water meters. AMI will allow you to monitor your water use similar to the Flume. Download EyeOnWater to set leak alerts!
Will the City be limiting my water use through AMI?

No, the City will not be restricting water use through AMI.
What if I don't want AMI on my water meter?

The AMI radio is installed on the City-owned meter, which is generally located in the sidewalk in front of your property and not on your private property or your privately owned water service line. There is no option to 'opt out' of the installation of AMI on the water meter as having access to up-to-date water use information from your meter is critical to City water and wastewater operations.
Water service is in my tenant's name. Can I still create an EyeOnWater account for my property?

No. The person on the water bill is the only individual that is able to create an EyeOnWater account. It is at the discretion of the account holder to share log in information with the landlord. Account access is only valid as long as the account number is active. If the property changes tenant, a new log in will need to be created by the new tenant.

Account holders are able to set leak alert notifications to send to multiple emails. If landlords would like to be notified of leaks, this is the preferred way.
Is AMI technology safe?

Yes, the AMI device is safe. AMI radios use low-power radiofrequency (RF) signals like other typical household items, including Wi-Fi routers, cell phones, and baby monitors. However, the AMI radio RF signals are significantly lower. For example, the RF exposure from an AMI radio is hundreds of times lower than that from a typical cell phone. Additionally, the AMI meter only transmits data four times per day. Health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have found no credible evidence linking low-level RF exposure to health risks. Please also remember that these devices are located outside of your home, generally within your water meter box in the City sidewalk.
