The contents of your green-lidded organics container are taken the Kompogas Dry Anaerobic Digestion Facility, located near the airport. This in vessel system relies on bacteria to convert organic materials into a high-quality organic compost and carbon-neutral biogas. The biogas is converted into enough electricity to power 600 homes a year.
Kompogas San Luis Obispo LLC sells the compost to large scale users, such as local farms and wineries, donates compost for local parks, and hosts two public give away events each year. In the rare event that the Kompogas facility is down for maintenance, organic materials are taken to Engel & Gray, Inc. located in Santa Maria for composting.
