Free Mattress Recycling Opportunities

Residents of San Luis Obispo may bring up to three (3) mattresses or box springs to the Cold Canyon Landfill* for FREEThe program is offered at the landfill at 2268 Carpenter Canyon Rd. from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Commercial businesses are not covered by this program, but have a low mattress disposal fee of $15.50 per piece.

**NEW!** As of January 1, 2020, futon mattresses are included in the Mattress Recycling Council program!

The State of California has taken a large role in mattress recycling by certifying the Mattress Recycling Council (byebyemattress.com) and writing into law the Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act. Consumers are charged an extra $10.50 recycling fee when buying a mattress or box spring in California - this money funds the Mattress Recycling Council's activities!

The Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act requires that:

  • All businesses offer no-charge take-back of customer's used mattresses and box springs when delivering a new mattress or box spring (unless using a common carrier for delivery).
  • Manufacturers and brands must register with CalRecycle so that recycling practices can be monitored. Retailers may only sell mattresses from registered brands.
  • Only used mattresses in safe and non-hazardous condition be picked up for recycling.

*If your business offers free recycling of mattresses and box springs, please contact RecycleRight@slocity.org to be added to this list.
