Did you know that an aluminum can will be back on the shelf in 60 days if recycled? If not, it will sit in a landfill for 500 years before it oxidizes!
State assembly bill AB 939 requires that all communities in the State of California shall recycle at least 50% of the solid waste from the waste stream or face fines of up to $10,000 per day. With the passage of AB 341 the State has adopted a goal of recycling 75% by the year 2020. To meet these goals, the City of San Luis Obispo has contracted with San Luis Garbage Company to offer the City of San Luis Obispo’s businesses and residents commingled single stream recycling.
Stay tuned for new projects in our Garbage and Recycling programs to help us meet these goals!

Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to our local landfills, prevents pollution and saves energy. Each resident in San Luis Obispo has access to residential recycling bins of 32, 64 or 96 gallon capacity included in the price of regular garbage service. Please contact San Luis Garbage for questions regarding waste services.
It is crucial that we keep our recycling clean! Contamination prevention starts at the bin and is the responsibility of our entire community. Follow these three easy steps to avoid contamination in your recycling bins:
- Check the list. Recycling summary and resources listed below.
- Wipe it clean. Wipe out food-containing recyclables with a paper towel before disposing of them. Rinsing wastes water and is not usually necessary.
- Properly dispose. Remember that recyclables should not be bagged (with the exception of shredded paper).
