New 65% Diversion/Recycling Requirement

Title 24 Chapter 11 of the 2016 Green Building Code now requires that all permitted construction projects must recycle and/or salvage at least 65% of the waste generated from the project. This applies to all projects where the permit application date was after January 1, 2017.

The 2016 Green Building Code also requires that: all construction and demolition projects have a waste plan that identifies all of the material that will be diverted from disposal by efficient usage, recycling, reuse on the project or salvage for future use or sale.

This plan:

  • determines if the construction and demolition waste materials will be sorted on-site (source separated) of bulk mixed (single stream).
  • Identifies diversion facilities where the construction and demolition waste will be taken.
  • Specifies that the amount of construction and demolition waste materials shall be calculated by weight or volume, but not both.

To help meet requirements of the the Green Building Code, below is a partial list of local companies that offer waste disposal and recycling services, this list is in no way meant as an endorsement of these companies or their services.  Please take the time to do your own research and develop a comprehensive recycling plan for your project.

The landfills and transfer stations in San Luis Obispo County accept mixed loads of construction and demolition materials at a recycling diversion rate of 70%.

Several local businesses and organizations also accept construction materials for reuse or recycling. Check out this Construction and demolition materials chart (click link for enlarged version with links to company websites).
