The North Chorro Neighborhood Greenway project improves pedestrian and bicycle safety, accessibility, and traffic calming. The Broad/Murray intersection presented specific challenges, particularly with ADA compliance, due to underground stormwater infrastructure, topographical constraints and right of way.

Current Intersection Design

  • The current curb ramp configuration is an interim solution, not a final fix.
  • It routes pedestrians through a delineated shoulder path on Broad Street using paint, tactile guides, wheel stops, and flex posts.
  • Design avoids storm drain inlets that cannot be moved due to critical drainage function.

Long-Term Goal

  • The City seeks to build corner ramps on the Murray leg for a more conventional and accessible crossing.
  • Requires acquisition of pedestrian easements from adjacent private properties.

 North Curb Ramp

Broad & Murray Exhibit 1

Pedestrians will turn left onto the concrete landing area then proceed down the ramp to the crosswalk. The design is to avoid the existing storm drain inlets.

 Center Curb Ramp

Broad & Murray Exhibit 3

Pedestrians walking along Murray Ave will proceed straight down the ramp to a large landing area. The three crosswalks will connect to the landing and have a straight approach to the respective curb ramps. The new design will reduce potential trip hazards and provide a more direct approach from the other curb ramps. The existing decorative brick-like surface will be removed.

South Curb Ramp

Pedestrians will proceed down the ramp to a flat landing area to easily change direction. Pedestrians from the landing area will proceed down the second slope of the ramp to the crosswalk. The design is to reduce the impacts on the property owners and avoid the existing storm drain inlets.

Pedestrian Visibility at the Intersection

  • A new California Vehicle Code (22500(n)) prohibits parking near crosswalks to improve pedestrian visibility:
    • 20 feet before a crosswalk or intersection (on the approach side)
    • 15 feet if a curb extension is present
  • You can read more in the City’s news story
  • There was also a suggestion to consider a curb extension (concrete or striping) to slow right turns from Broad onto Murray and improve sightlines for pedestrians. Staff is reviewing this input.

On-Street Parking Spaces

  • The proposed curb ramp design will result in a net gain of approximately three parking spaces (see attached exhibit).
  • We also heard clearly that parking availability remains a concern. Some neighbors requested the City consider additional opportunities to restore on-street parking.
