Welcome to the City’s Public Construction Projects page. Also known as Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), these efforts showcase how we’re investing in the future of San Luis Obispo. From park upgrades to road improvements, each project contributes to creating a safer, more sustainable, and better-connected community.

Every two years, the San Luis Obispo City Council adopts a Financial Plan to fund essential services and community improvements. A central part of this plan is the Capital Improvement Plan, which focuses on maintaining, upgrading, and building the infrastructure and facilities that keep our city moving forward.

The CIP is managed by the CIP Project Engineering Program, which ensures that projects are designed and built efficiently and meet high-quality standards. These projects improve essential infrastructure, such as buildings, parks, streets, water systems, wastewater systems, and flood control systems. The program also oversees inspections of public infrastructure built by private developers to ensure it meets City standards.

The CIP Project Engineering Program focuses on four main activities:

  • Designing Projects: Planning and preparing designs, acquiring property if needed, and creating project plans and specifications.
  • Managing Construction: Handling bids, awarding contracts, inspecting construction work, and approving payments for progress.
  • Inspecting Private Development: Reviewing construction by private developers on public facilities to make sure it meets City standards.
  • Keeping Records: Updating and maintaining maps, legal documents, and construction records for City streets and infrastructure.

Together, these efforts help ensure that San Luis Obispo’s infrastructure is safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community for years to come.
