Pay  Benefits  Work/Life Balance
  • Earn up to $156,576.50/year. This includes base salary plus bilingual pay, education incentive, holiday pay and uniform allowance outlined below. (Effective July 2026, earn up to $162,843/year base pay plus incentives and allowances outlined below)

  • 3 specialty assignments and a POST Advanced Cert earn you top step pay.

  • $2,600/year bilingual pay.

  • 2.63% POST Intermediate Cert or A.A or equivalent pay.

  • 5.26% POST Advanced Cert or B.A. or equivalent pay.

  • Investigators/Bomb Technicians standby pay of $50/ day regularly scheduled workday. $70/day on regularly scheduled day off.

  • Training Officer Incentive, $100/day

  • $1300/ year uniform allowance.

  • Paid briefing/donning overtime up to $6,000/year

  • Night Shift Shift Differential, $200/pay period

  • 4% pay increase in 2026

  • CALPERS retirement 2.7% @ 57
  • Classic members transferring from a CalPERS agency or a qualifying reciprocal retirement system with a 6 month or less break in service, will be enrolled in the PERS Retirement 2nd Tier benefit.

  •  3/12 work schedule with 1 additional 8 hour day per pay period, 4/10 for some specialty assignments
  • 52 hour holiday leave bank applied the first pay period of January PLUS 2 additional HL hours paid out each paycheck for 26 pay periods (104 hours total)
  • 2.5 to 4 weeks of vacation accrual per year (dependent on years of service)
  • Overtime as pay or compensatory time bank at 1.5x
  • Sick leave up to 8 hours/month; no maximum
  • Up to $1500 education reimbursement per year.
  • TRIP Incentive program: Up to 16 hours/year of additional paid vacation for taking alternative transportation to work.

Lateral Incentives - Police Officer

  • A 100% service credit towards vacation accrual for completed public sector years of service is available.
  • An additional 40 hours of vacation upon completion of the first 6-months of employment.
  • Possible advanced base salary step based on prior law enforcement experience.

 

Earn Pay While Attending The Academy 

  • SLOPD will pay you $45.08/hour to attend the Police Academy, pay your tuition, and provide your equipment.
  • Benefits while attending the academy include health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Earn PERS retirement credit while attending the academy.

The minimum qualifications for Police Trainee are: 

  1. Any education equivalent to graduation from high school
  2. Be at least 21 years of age
  3. Not have any felony convictions
  4. Be able to pass a comprehensive background
  5. Possess a valid California Driver's License at time of appointment
  6. Be a United States citizen or have permanent resident alien status and applied for citizenship

SPECIALTY ASSIGNMENTS

Never Stop Learning

The San Luis Obispo Police Department offers its officers the chance to pursue special assignments within 18 months of joining the department. These assignments rotate every four years, providing numerous opportunities for officers to diversify their skills and experiences. Additionally, officers who attain the rank of Senior Police Officer (SPO) receive a 5.26% pay increase. 

On the path to becoming a Senior Police Officer, the San Luis Obispo Police Department offers various specialty assignments, such as Traffic Officer, Investigator, School Resource Officer, and more. To qualify as a Senior Police Officer, officers must meet specific eligibility requirements, including completing advanced training and multiple specialty assignments. Once achieved, Senior Police Officers receive increased compensation as mentioned above, and may be eligible for additional responsibilities such as becoming Field Training Officers.
