A Newly Proposed Pilot Bike Park

This bike park initiative is a part of Parks & Recreation's Blueprint for the Future (master plan) and supports park activation and building community through site planning and provision. Parks & Recreation recognizes the community's need for an all-levels bike park as one of the top five short-term priorities and will pilot the proposed bike park until a proposed development of a permanent park is approved.

The pilot bike park will be designed and constructed in phases over the next several months by Ranger Service staff and volunteers with the opportunity to evaluate and plan a professionally built bike park in the future.

Bike Park Update (November 2025)

Phase 2 of the Laguna Lake Bike Park is open to the public—weather permitting-- while rangers work on updating signage to complete the buildout. Phase 2 includes two new lines: a progressive line for riders to build foundational jump skills, and a challenging expert line that features bigger jumps. A mulch jump has also been completed, providing a safer experience for riders to practice their technique and gain confidence before moving on to harder jumps.  All jumps are open to the public.

PREVIOUS UPDATES

Bike Park Update (January 2025)

Staff and Volunteers have continued to improve on Phase 1 including a full resurfacing of the Kids Pump Track and reshaping and repairing the first berm.   In addition, the Beginner Mountain Bike Loop has a lot of new additions: two new berms, two additional rollers, and two new skills areas including five skinnies and three rock drops offering progression for riders to improve their skills.

While Phase 2 construction of dirt jumps is ongoing, the Progressive line is complete and open to the public.  Ranger Staff are recruiting volunteers to refine and build the expert line with monthly workdays where riders can test and refine the jumps.  Sign up on the city's volunteer portal, EngageSLO.

Bike Park Update (November 2024)

Phase 2 Construction is underway on  the Laguna Lake Bike Park: two jump lines designed for intermediate to expert riders.  When complete, this area of the bike park will boast two jump lines: the Progressive Line, which is designed to start with easier jumps that become more difficult as you go, and the Expert Line, with challenging jumps for experienced riders who have mastered the progressive line.

City staff and volunteers have been hard at work over the last two months with construction being more than halfway done.  Rough dirt mounds and some finished jumps are in place and will continue to be worked on by both staff and select volunteers.

A major part of building bike features is testing and making adjustments.   While you may see volunteers riding some of the jumps during scheduled workdays, the jumps are still under construction and are therefore closed to the public.  While full completion of the jumps is still a little ways out, the Progressive Line should be open to the public in 3-6 weeks.

Staff are extremely appreciative of the amazing volunteer support from the community, and are currently growing the volunteer base little by little and working to get everyone involved who signed up during the community meeting in March.  As the project amenities go on-line and begin to have use, more and more volunteers will be needed to keep up on maintenance and help assess the skills areas. Stay tuned for future needs for involvement!

And a huge thank you to the volunteers that have put in so much time and effort to make this happen.  Staff are extremely appreciative and couldn’t (and can’t) do this without you! The bike park is better because of their input and work effort. Thank You!

Bike Park Update (August 2024)

Phase 1 Construction Complete

Construction of the Beginner Mountain Bike Loop and Kid’s Pump Track are complete and both amenities are open for use.  Ranger staff installed signage in late July to officially open the Laguna Lake Bike Park.  Special thank you to Central Coast Landscape for donating fill material to help shape the berms and rollers for the Kids Pump Track.

  • Beginner Mountain Bike Loop Trail: A half-mile loop trail designed to help beginners get comfortable riding on dirt and single-track trails. The trail is rated as beginner to intermediate difficulty with optional, skill-building features such as rollers, a rock garden, and log obstacles. These features are designed to teach basic mountain biking skills and help riders develop their confidence and abilities.

  • Kids Pump Track: Specifically designed for riders under the age of 8, the Kids Pump Track features small rollers and banked turns that help young riders develop their off-road riding skills in a safe and controlled environment.

What’s Next? Phase 2 Construction: Jump Lines

Ranger staff, in coordination with key volunteers, have identified two potential jump lines to be built as part of Phase 2 construction. Since skill progression was identified as an important theme in survey responses, the goal of the jump lines will be to provide jumps that start out easy and get progressively more difficult to support riders as they progress their skills. The initiation of this next phase will be determined by the impact of current priorities of Ranger Service in maintaining other key Open Space projects. Staff anticipate working on Phase 2 in late fall 2024.  Updates on the timeline will be announced on this page.

Volunteer Opportunities

Staff has engaged a small group of key volunteers who have extensive experience in both beginner and advanced bike park and feature design. With their expertise in assisting City staff the park will be built, in their own words, “to look like artwork”. Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey and gave valuable feedback to shape the design and future of the park, and special thanks to everyone who offered their time and resources to help get this project off the ground. Right now, the priority use of volunteers is with those that have extensive experience in trail and park design. As the project amenities go on-line and begin to have use, more and more volunteers will be needed to keep up on maintenance and help assess the skills areas, so stay tuned for future needs for involvement!

Special thanks to Bobby Boss, Michael Murphey, and Dan Sisemore for their feedback and work on the beginner mountain bike loop. And thanks to Edmond Dinescu, John Lentz, and Seth Draine for their assistance in coordinating with staff on the planning and layout for the upcoming jump lines. Staff are extremely appreciative and couldn’t (and can’t) do this without you!  The bike park is better because of their input and work effort. Thank You!

Bike Park Design

Informed by the Parks & Recreation Blueprint (master plan – July 2021), City staff developed a multi-phased layout to meet the recreational needs of the community.

Features that will be included in phase 1 construction:

  • Kids Pump Track designed for ages 3-8  – Design Complete, construction to begin soon
    • Short course with small rollers and berms
    • Provide kids an opportunity to develop comfort riding on dirt and a fun introduction to biking for families
  • Mountain Bike Loop – Currently Under Construction
    • Cross-country focused as course is mostly flat
    • Approximately ½ mile loop
    • Specifically designed with features to practice and learn the essential skills of mountain biking

Ranger Service will complete additional phases of construction several months after phase 1 completion.

Phase 2 construction – To begin Fall 2024 - Spring 2025
  • 2 Jump Lines
    • Trail with dirt features which allow riders to carry speed through corners and small jumps
    • Includes berms and tabletops, and could include multiple line options to challenge riders of differing skill levels
Potential Future Features
  • Pump Track
    • More like a skate park footprint than a linear trail
    • Loop track on flat ground with rollers, berms, and jumps that riders “pump” through to gain speed rather than pedaling
    • Larger pump tracks include multiple lines and transfer options
  • Dual Slalom
    • Two identical tracks laid out side by side
    • Mix between pump track and jump line
    • Includes berms, rollers, and small jumps
    • Allows for head-to-head racing
