Wildfires are a natural part of our environment, but the risk they pose to homes and lives can be significantly reduced through effective home hardening. Home hardening focuses on improving the ability of a structure to resist ignition from embers, radiant heat, and direct flame contact during a wildfire.
Simple upgrades can greatly increase a home’s chances of surviving a wildfire.
Home hardening is required for ALL new homes, remodels, or additions in the City of San Luis Obispo.
The following recommendations (Spanish) from the 2025 CA WUI Code, are intended to ensure that new buildings/remodels are designed and constructed to resist damage from wildfires and to mitigate fire spread.
Home hardening compliance will be confirmed through building permit process. It does not apply retroactively and is only triggered by the issuance of a building permit.
We are currently developing a home hardening assessment program. In the meantime, homeowners can complete our home hardening self-inspection checklist
