Guiding Development and Protecting City Trees

The City’s Urban Forestry program is supported by two departments working together to care for our community’s trees. Public Works oversees tree maintenance, while Community Development manages tree removal requests. Each Department handles a different part of keeping our urban forest healthy and safe.

Urban Forestry’s Role in a Thriving Community

Urban forestry is important because it creates healthier and more enjoyable spaces in the City. Trees provide many benefits - wildlife habitat, stormwater control, and air and water quality improvements. Trees and the environments they create increase our well-being because they provide shade, beauty, and fun places to play. Our Urban Forestry program helps us achieve our Major City Goal by supporting the Climate Action Plan and making our community more resilient and beautiful.

The City of San Luis Obispo Public Works Urban Forestry Program cares for approximately 14,000 trees in the public right-of-way, City parks, and landscaped areas of public facilities. The Urban Forestry team performs pruning, removal of dead and hazardous trees, planting and watering, and emergency operations.

The City is divided into 9 maintenance areas, with a pruning schedule for city trees approximately every 6 years. Dead or dangerous trees are promptly addressed for safety.
