About the Belonging Project
The Belonging Project is a new, ongoing initiative led by the City of San Luis Obispo’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in partnership with community organizations and local experts, created to help ensure our community is a place where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Building on the City’s Community Belonging Series, this effort brings people together through workshops, cultural events, community dialogues, and collaborative partnerships to spark meaningful conversations, promote understanding, and provide practical tools for individuals, businesses, and organizations to strengthen inclusive relationships and help all members of our community thrive.

What Came Before: Community Belonging Series
The Belonging Project builds on the success of another limited program: the Community Belonging Series. The City of San Luis Obispo partnered with Cal Poly to bring the community a variety of events and activities that was meant to foster a more connected, welcoming city where everyone feels they belong.
Project History
The Community Belonging Series was a a joint effort between the City of San Luis Obispo and the Cal Poly Office of University Diversity & Inclusion (OUDI) to coordinate and implement comprehensive educational and cultural programs that celebrated diverse contributions and developed a space for learning, challenged biases, and promoted unity and belonging for all community members. These efforts ran from early 2024 to mid-2025 and were designed to promote dialogue while creating opportunities for all communities to expand their cultural awareness.
