San Luis Obispo Welcomes New Director of Parks and Recreation

Post Date:10/08/2019

The City of San Luis Obispo is happy to welcome Greg Avakian as the new Parks and Recreation Department Director. Avakian is the Director of Recreational Sports at Cal Poly and holds degrees in Recreation Management and a Master’s in Education with a focus in Leadership along with 25 years of experience in both university and municipal recreation.

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department manages 23 parks, the SLO Swim Center and Laguna Lake Golf Course, organizes community events, holds classes and activities for all ages including affordable after school programs, and more.

Avakian is known for innovative events and programs, industry expertise in aquatics and recreational sports, and for his mentorship and development of employees. Over the last two years, he served as a volunteer as the Chair of the City’s Parks and Recreation Commission. As part of the City’s update to its Parks and Recreation Element update and Master Plan process, Avakian attended pop up events, community engagement sessions, and multiple public meetings on this critical topic that is setting the foundation for the City’s future parks and recreational facilities and programs. In his new role, he has stepped down from this volunteer position.

“I am really looking forward to joining such a dynamic team with the City of San Luis Obispo,” Avakian said. “It is such an amazing opportunity to be more involved and provide my community with recreation and community programs.”

The Parks and Recreation Department was previously led by Shelly Stanwyck, who is now serving as Assistant City Manager of Community Services.
