Community Invited to Review and Discuss Research Developed on Bikeshare Policies
On Tuesday, October 1, at a regular start of 6 p.m., the San Luis Obispo City Council will hold a study session on bikeshare policies in other cities and provide feedback of next steps. Community members are encouraged to review the agenda report on this topic (link here)and attend the meeting to learn more and provide comments. The research conducted for this report is consistent with the Circulation Element of the General Plan which states:
Policy 4.2.1: The City shall evaluate a bike share program in coordination with Cal Poly and other educational institutions.
As noted in the agenda report, staff reviewed policies in California cities similar to San Luis Obispo in size, demographics, and location, and also examined several national cities too. Of the cities that had established bikeshare policies, most required varying regulations on where bicycles could be parked following a process of public input involving stakeholders prior to adoption of the policy. Staff will also present information regarding the role bikeshare services may have in increasing bicycling as a mode of transportation.
At the study session Council will receive a summary presentation from staff, receive input from the public, and provide feedback to staff regarding potential next steps.
