Fire Department Announces Community Wildfire Protection Plan

On Tuesday, September 3, the City Council received the Fire Department’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Over the past decade, California has seen an increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires impacting both rural and urban communities. Specifically, in the past two years the state has experienced the most destructive and deadly fires in its history. In response to these impacts, the San Luis Obispo County Fire Safe Council sponsored a grant to develop a County-wide Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). 

The CWPP is a collaborative plan to guide the City in addressing fire protection planning efforts to minimize wildfire risk to watershed lands, assets, firefighters and the public. It presents the City’s physical and social characteristics, wildfire history, identifies and evaluates landscape-scale fire hazard variables, utilizes priority landscape data used to evaluate wildfire risk, identifies strategic measures for reducing structural ignitability, public education and outreach, and identifies strategic fuel reduction goals and techniques for minimizing wildfire risk. Once adopted, the CWPP will be managed and updated routinely by the City Fire Department with community member and stakeholder input and involvement. To read the plan, click here.

Community members are invited to a preparedness workshop on Thursday, September 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the City/County Library Community Room. There will be resources available about how to get prepared for various disasters, and what to do when one happens.  

Also on Tuesday PG&E gave a presentation on the Power Shutoff Plan. To help protect customers and communities during extreme weather events, electric power may be shut off for public safety in an effort to prevent wildfires. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). These outages may last several days. 

If a Public Safety Power Shutoff is needed due to extreme conditions, you can expect:

  • Early Warning Notification – PG&E will aim to send customer alerts before shutting off power.
  • Ongoing Updates – PG&E will provide updates through social media, local news outlets & their website.
  • Safety Inspections – After extreme weather has passed, PG&E will inspect the lines in affected areas before power is safely restored.
  • Power Restoration – Power outages could last multiple days depending on the severity of the weather and other factors. It is important that you and your family have an emergency preparedness plan in place.
