Parking technology upgrades in Downtown San Luis Obispo
The City of San Luis Obispo continues to improve parking in the Downtown core with new technology including electric vehicle charging stations and additional credit card meters.
EV Charing Stations
The City partnered with PG&E and ChargePoint, Inc. to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Lot 4 – the Post Office parking lot – beneath the Marsh Street parking structure. A total of 19 charging spaces are now available including two reserved for vehicles with a valid disabled placard or license plate.
The charging stations can be used by electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids for $1.50/hour for the first four hours, then $4.00/hour thereafter. The graduated hourly rate is intended to encourage turnover and availability. Users must be members of the Chargepoint network use the new system. The charging stations were funded through a grant from PG&E’s EV Charge Network Program and the City’s Parking Fund. The PG&E EV Charge Network program is a three-year initiative to install 7,500 electric vehicle chargers by the end of 2020. The City's contribution to the project was approximately $107,000. The City is currently evaluating the possibility of installing additional EV charging stations at other Downtown locations as well as the new park and ride lot located a Calle Joaquin and Los Osos Valley Road.
Since the City is centered between Los Angeles and San Francisco it was identified as an ideal location for recharging along coastal access corridor of US 101.
Trial Parking Meters
For visitors to Downtown, you may be seeing a new type of parking meter as we look to improve our systems for visitors. A pilot program has been launched to use twenty-six (26) new credit card meters in Downtown to test ease of use and better accounting of use. These meters can be found on the 900 block of Broad Street and 700 block of Monterey Street; adjacent to Mission Plaza. These meters are easier to read and use for patrons while offering all the functionality of our current credit card capable meters.
The hourly rate is $1.50/hour and enforcement hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The meters have been installed for a 60-day trial period and the City will evaluate the success of the meters and consider purchasing them to replace the existing parking meters that are already installed throughout the Downtown area.
