Community Development Informational Series
The Community Development Department plays a key role in guiding the future of urban development in San Luis Obispo. Community Development implements the policies of the Planning Commission and City Council in the City's General Plan, and reviews new construction to ensure consistency with growth management rules, zoning and building codes, subdivision regulations and community design guidelines.
The development process can be complicated, with many steps throughout. That’s why we launched an informational series to help you better understand what we do, and how you can get involved.

Community planning involves the complex interaction of individuals, neighborhood groups, business organizations, environmental groups and land developers with appointed and elected City officials and city staff. The elected five-member City Council appoints people to serve on a variety of commissions and committees that help oversee various parts of the planning program and provide an important means for citizen participation in city government. The Community Development Department staff are professionals who work with the City Council and appointed citizen groups to administer adopted planning, building and engineering programs.
