Here's a look at the work planned for the coming weeks as we continue improving neighborhoods across the city with projects that enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity.

Transportation, Paving, & Mobility Improvements

Higuera Complete Streets Project: Curb ramp work is expected to start at the S. Higuera and Los Osos Valley Road intersection moving up block-by-block towards Prado. Commuters can expect bike lane closures and pedestrians can expect sidewalk detours. While the overall construction duration may last up to 12 months, work will move throughout the project area in phases. Because of this, most roadway work in a particular location is expected to last a few weeks or less before crews move to the next area. 

As part of the City’s Complete Streets program, this project will enhance safety, accessibility, critical road maintenance needs, and improve overall travel comfort for residents, workers and visitors walking, biking, driving, and riding transit along Higuera Street. Through SLO in Motion, the Higuera Complete Streets project reflects our community’s commitment to well‑maintained streets, easier connections, and a transportation network that supports everyone, no matter how they get around.

2026 Transportation, Paving, & Mobility Project: 

• Slurry Sealing- We expect to begin slurry sealing as early as Tuesday next week in the French Park and Islay Park neighborhoods. Community members can expect to get prior notification via a door hanger/flyer (at least 72-hours prior) if their street will be impacted. Work is expected to happen Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. During slurry sealing, community members can expect no parking in the area, temporary road closures with detours, and intermittent flagging.
  
  
• Striping Removal & Crack Sealing - As the contractor prepares for slurry seal, we expect to continue removing striping and crack sealing for a couple more weeks near Southwood Drive, Meadow Park, and Broad Street. During striping removal and crack sealing operations, the streets will remain open for vehicle traffic, but residents and commuters may see temporary no parking signs and can expect minor traffic impacts due to rolling traffic lane closures with detours, flagging, lane shifting, and bike lane closures. Work on Broad Street from Tank Farm to Farmhouse is expected to happen at night for several nights to minimize traffic impacts during the day.

  If you see No Parking signs posted in your neighborhood but have not received a second slurry seal notification, this means we are currently in the crack sealing and striping removal process.
  
  Residents will receive a separate notification prior to the start of slurry seal operations. 

South & King Intersection:  We expect to wrap up ADA curb ramp restoration work as well as beginning asphalt work as part of the first phase of the traffic light installation at the South & King Intersection. Commuters can expect minor traffic delays due to lane shifting, bike lane closures and sidewalk closures with detours. People driving, please remember to drive carefully in the area and share the road with people biking.  

Downtown Sidewalk Improvements: We expect to continue sidewalk repairs on Marsh Street between Morro and Chorro and near the intersection of Broad and Islay Streets. During construction, commuters can expect lane shifting, sidewalk closures and detours, and no parking in the areas. 

Sewer & Water Projects

Work to upgrade vital infrastructure and enhance the reliability, capacity, and safety of our water and sewer system is underway. See what areas we’re working on below.

California Waterline Replacement: We expect to continue replacing the waterline on California from Taft to Mill Street. Construction crews are expected to be at the intersection of California & Mill as well as California & Phillips. During construction, commuters and pedestrians can expect traffic impacts due to lane closures, intermittent flagging, bike lane and sidewalk closures. 

Islay Sewer Replacement: We expect to continue trench work on Santa Rosa from Islay to Railroad Avenue, as well as continuing to pave the areas where sewer pipes have already been replaced. Work will be happening one block at a time (estimated one-two weeks per block). Work will be Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. During construction, commuters and pedestrians can expect traffic impacts due to lane closures, flagging, one-way traffic, and road closures with detours in the area.

Park Projects

Righetti Community Park: We expect to continue utility work on Tiburon Way near the Ranch House Road roundabout as well as continuing on-site retaining walls, bathroom construction, bridge work, and pathways. Community members can expect minimal traffic impacts due to vehicles and equipment moving in and out of the area. Pedestrians can expect sidewalk closures with detours. Standard construction hours will be 7 a.m.– 4 p.m.

Potholing and preparation work for the upcoming Higuera Complete Streets Project.

Allow Extra Travel Time: Due to ongoing construction, please allow for extra travel time when navigating these areas. 


Slow Down for Construction Crews: Please reduce your speed and exercise caution when driving through construction zones. Slow down if you see orange cones. Our dedicated crews are working diligently to make San Luis Obispo safer for everyone.

Once complete, they will keep SLO in motion, keeping our infrastructure in tip-top shape, making it easier and safer for community members to get around, connecting communities, and creating healthy recreational opportunities for community members.
