Here's a look at the work planned for the coming weeks as we continue improving neighborhoods across the city with projects that enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity.

Transportation, Paving, & Mobility Improvements

 2026 Transportation, Paving, & Mobility Project: We expect to begin removing striping from streets for at least a few weeks before we start slurry sealing. Work is expected to begin as early as Monday of next week beginning with the Sinsheimer Park neighborhood. Community members can expect to get prior notification via a door hanger/flyer (at least 72-hours prior) if their street will be impacted. Work is expected to happen Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. During striping removal operations, commuters can expect minor traffic impacts due to rolling lane closures with detours, flagging, lane shifting, and bike lane closures. 

South & King Intersection: We expect to begin ADA curb ramp restoration work as part of the first phase of the traffic light installation at the South & King Intersection. Commuters can expect minor traffic delays due to bike lane closures and sidewalk closures with detours. People driving, please remember to drive carefully in the area and share the road with people biking.

50 Higuera Street Widening: We expect to begin concrete work for sidewalk improvements in front of 50 Higuera Street between Bridge Street and Elks Lane. Work will be Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. During construction, pedestrians can expect sidewalk closures, and commuters can expect bike and road lane closures in the area. We expect to have traffic control setup 24/7 for a couple of weeks and a sidewalk closure 24/7 for at least a week. 

Sewer & Water Projects

Work to upgrade vital infrastructure and enhance the reliability, capacity, and safety of our water and sewer system is underway. See what areas we’re working on below.

California Waterline Replacement: We expect to continue trench work to continue replacing the waterline on California from Taft to Mill Street including on the Railroad Safety Trail bridge. To minimize traffic impacts, nightwork is expected for a few nights starting in the middle of the week from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. During construction, commuters and pedestrians can expect traffic impacts due to lane closures, detours near Phillips Lane, intermittent flagging, bike lane and sidewalk closures.

Islay Sewer Replacement: We expect to begin trench work on Santa Rosa from Islay to Railroad Avenue, as well as continuing to pave the areas where sewer pipes have already been replaced. Work will be happening one block at a time (estimated one-two weeks per block). Work will be Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. 

During construction, commuters and pedestrians can expect traffic impacts due to lane closures, flagging, one-way traffic, and road closures with detours in the area.

Park Projects

Righetti Community Park: We expect to begin utility work on Tiburon Way near the Ranch House Road roundabout as well as continuing on-site retaining walls and storm drain work. Community members can expect minimal traffic impacts due to vehicles and equipment moving in and out of the area. Pedestrians can expect sidewalk closures with detours. Standard construction hours will be 7 a.m.– 4 p.m.

Tree Improvements & Maintenance

Chorro & Marsh Street: As early as next week, we will be working on both Marsh Street and Chorro Street to enhance pedestrian safety, sidewalk accessibility, and overall mobility for all community members. These upgrades will support a safer, more comfortable streetscape once work is complete. During construction, commuters can expect bike lane closures and intermittent lane closures. 

Marsh Street (between Marsh Street Parking Garage and the Post Office): 

• Remove one tree to improve sidewalk walkability and pedestrian safety 
• Replace protected crosswalk equipment 
• Replant a tree once sidewalk repairs are finished 

Chorro Street (between Mountainview and Lincoln Streets):

• Remove one tree to improve sidewalk walkability, pedestrian safety, and bike lane rideability
• Repair the sidewalk
• Replant a tree once sidewalk repairs are finished 

Coming Soon:

• Striping work as part of the 50 Higuera Widening Project 
• Slurry sealing of streets throughout San Luis Obispo as part of the 2026 Transportation, Paving, & Mobility Improvements

Allow Extra Travel Time: Due to ongoing construction, please allow for extra travel time when navigating these areas. 


Slow Down for Construction Crews: Please reduce your speed and exercise caution when driving through construction zones. Slow down if you see orange cones. Our dedicated crews are working diligently to make San Luis Obispo safer for everyone.

Once complete, they will keep SLO in motion, keeping our infrastructure in tip-top shape, making it easier and safer for community members to get around, connecting communities, and creating healthy recreational opportunities for community members.
