Starting late August 2026, improvements will begin on various sections of Higuera Street. These improvements are part of the Complete Streets initiative, the City’s efforts to enhance safety, accessibility and connectivity for all road users in San Luis Obispo. Through SLO in Motion, the Higuera Complete Streets project reflects our community’s commitment to well‑maintained streets, easier connections, and a transportation network that supports everyone, no matter how they get around.  

Key project highlights include: 

• Improve pedestrian crossings and accessible curb ramps   
• Strengthen connections to transit and nearby neighborhoods 
• Increase visibility and separation for people bicycling 
• Upgrade traffic signals to improve safety and reduce emergency response delays 
• Repair potholes and rehabilitate pavement  

Complete Streets improvements are planned on:   

• Higuera Street from Los Osos Valley Road to Marsh Street   
• Madonna Road from Higuera Street to the US 101 Overpass  
• Meadow Park Neighborhood (Bridge Street, Exposition Drive, Corrida Drive, and Woodbridge Street)

Construction Timeline and What to Expect 

Work is anticipated to begin as early as Monday, August 24, 2026, where we expect to start work near the Los Osos Valley Road and S. Higuera intersection and make our way up north. Work will move throughout the project area in phases and is expected to be completed by spring 2027. Because of this, most roadway work in a particular location is expected to last a few weeks or less before crews move to the next area. During construction, access to sidewalks, driveways, and businesses will be maintained whenever possible. If temporary access disruptions are needed, businesses will be notified in advance, and alternate routes or adjusted work hours will be used to help minimize impacts.   

Standard construction hours will be Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the possibility of night work to minimize traffic impacts during the most disruptive phases of construction.  

During construction community members can expect:  

• Temporary closures of traffic lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalks  
• Lane shifting and reduced speeds through construction zones 
• Temporary detours and traffic noise 
• Odors during roadway paving/sealing, and striping work 
• Use of heavy equipment 

Impacted residents and businesses will receive advance notice before work begins on their street. We appreciate the community’s patience as we work on these City improvements.
