As San Luis Obispo prepares for the return of students across all ages, the City of San Luis Obispo is sharing important information to help community members navigate the busy back-to-school period. This information is being provided one week before activities begin to help the community plan ahead. 

Key Dates for 2026

• Cuesta College classes begin on Monday, Aug. 17. 
• Safety Enhancement Zone is in effect Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 12:01 a.m. through Monday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 a.m. Fines double for certain violations during this period. 
• Cal Poly housing move-in starts Aug 18 – 19 for first-year and new students and continues Aug. 21 – 22 for continuing students.  
• Cal Poly Week of Welcome runs Aug. 18 – 23 (including a planned fireworks show during Big Fall Welcome at Spanos Stadium on Wednesday, Aug.19 for about a minute at around 8 p.m. and again for about seven minutes at around 9:05 p.m.).
• San Luis Coastal Unified School District classes begin on Thursday, Aug. 20 .
• Cal Poly classes begin on Monday, Aug. 24.

What Community Members Can Expect 

With Cal Poly switching from a quarter system to a semester system, activities are happening earlier in the year on campus. More than 5,500 new Cal Poly students and more than 3,300 continuing Cal Poly students will be arriving with their supporters next week.  

Later in the week, San Luis Coastal Unified School District will be welcoming back elementary school, middle school, and high school students back. With school starting in San Luis Obispo during the last two weeks of August 2026, community members can expect increased vehicle, bike, and pedestrian activity near local schools and the Cal Poly area. 

Please plan for heavier traffic, allow extra travel time, and be alert near crosswalks and bus stops.  

Tips for a Safe and Smooth Start 
The San Luis Obispo Police Department offers the following tips to stay safe around schools:

• Slow down and follow the speed limit.
• Stop for school buses. Watch for children rushing to catch the bus or exiting.
• Adhere to school policies and procedures for dropping off and picking up students.
• Watch carefully for pedestrians and cyclists at busy intersections. Yield at all marked and unmarked crosswalks.
• Whenever possible, walk, bike, or take transit to reduce congestion. For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when available and crossing at corners when there is no marked crosswalk.
• Follow all posted signs for detours, parking, loading zones, and temporary restrictions.
• Check the City’s website for updated traffic and construction information. 

Transit & Parking  

With more visitors and students arriving in town, community members can expect busier streets, limited parking, and detours along campus transit routes during move-in week.  

Transit agencies, including SLO Transit, expect higher ridership during Cal Poly move-in and Week of Welcome. Riders are encouraged to prepare for crowds, follow driver instructions, and keep aisles clear. 

Cal Poly students, faculty, and staff can ride SLO Transit buses for free with a valid Cal Poly ID. All riders are encouraged to download the Transit App for real-time arrival and departure information and consider riding transit whenever possible to reduce congestion.  

When visiting downtown, parking in one of the City’s four public parking garages is the easiest way to save time and money. The garages offer consistent availability, easy access, and affordable rates, all of which help community members avoid circling busy streets during peak back-to-school activity. City garages are located at 609 Palm St., 842 Palm St., 919 Palm St. and 871 Marsh St. Rates are $2 per hour, with a daily maximum of $8. 

Street parking is enforced Monday - Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1–9 p.m., with rates ranging from $2.25 to $2.75 per hour depending on location.

Noise regulations remain in effect throughout the city, and 

Safety Enhancement Zone 

the City encourages all community members to be aware of neighborhood expectations and to help maintain a respectful environment, especially during the Safety Enhancement Zone period. 

To promote safety during the start of the academic year, the entire area within San Luis Obispo city limits will be designated a Safety Enhancement Zone beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, the first Cal Poly housing move-in day. The zone will remain in place through 7:00 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, following Cal Poly’s first weekend of fall classes. 

During this period, fines for select violations are doubled; this includes noise, unruly gatherings, open container, and public urination violations. The ordinance is intended to support public safety during busy times when large numbers of students and families are arriving in town. For more details, visit respectslo.com.
