The San Luis Obispo City Council held a public meeting on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Below is a recap of that meeting. Review the full recorded video and agenda packet here.

The meeting began with the normal report given by City Manager, Whitney McDonald, on news and a variety of updates regarding the City. Then the Council moved on to several routine items featured in this meeting Consent Agenda which the Council was able to approve with a single vote for each item. These included:

• A grant application seeking up to $500,000 from the California Strategic Growth Council Community Resilience Centers Program to create a plan for a future Multicultural Center and Resilience Hub that would support community needs and give residents a safe place to go during heat waves, poor air quality days, power outages, and other climate related events.
• Releasing $350,000 in state Prohousing Incentive Program funds to three local affordable housing projects, including new homes for low‑income families, seniors, and residents needing supportive housing, thereby supporting vulnerable community members and addressing SLO’s ongoing housing affordability challenges.
• A grant application seeking up to $500,000 from the California Strategic Growth Council Calrecycle Beverage Container Recycling Program for new water‑bottle filling stations at four busy community parks and recreation facilities, making it easier for residents and visitors to use refillable bottles instead of single‑use plastics, which supports the City’s waste‑reduction and Climate Action Plan goals.
• Awarding a construction contract for the 2026 Silt Removal Project, an annual effort to clear built up sediment from key creek locations to reduce flood risk before winter storms. This work, which is fully funded through the county’s Zone 9 program, helps protect homes, infrastructure and public safety across the community as sediment buildup can narrow waterways and increase the chance of neighborhood flooding during heavy rain.

Council Approves Changes That Move Forward Prado Road Projects  
The City Council discussed moving forward with several key parts of the Prado Road Interchange and Prado Creek Bridge projects. This included starting the process to put utility and power lines underground, reviewing technical reports that help improve the design and lower long‑term costs, providing direction on the preferred look and design features for the interchange and giving the Architectural Review Committee authority to make final detailed design decisions, protecting space for a possible future bike and pedestrian path along Elks Lane, approving cost‑saving changes to the bridge design, and allowing staff to apply for competitive grants to help offset project costs. Staff will return to the City Council in September for final approval of an ordinance that allows the undergrounding of utilities.

The next City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers office at City Hall.
