SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The City of San Luis Obispo Fire Department will officially recognize Laguna Lake Mobile Estates as the City's third Firewise community during a resident meeting on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Laguna Lake Mobile Estates, 1801 Prefumo Canyon Road in the Community Center.
Laguna Lake Mobile Estates recently earned national recognition through the Firewise program, joining Buena Vista Estates and the San Luis Drive neighborhood as officially recognized Firewise communities within the City of San Luis Obispo.
Laguna Lake Mobile Estates is a mixed manufactured and traditional construction home community consisting of 300 residences on approximately 37 acres. It is bordered by the Irish Hills open space to the South and Prefumo Creek to the East. Portions of the community fall in the moderate, high, and very high fire severity zone CAL FIRE map.
The event will celebrate the dedication of residents and neighborhood leaders who worked alongside City staff over the past several months to reduce wildfire risk and strengthen neighborhood preparedness.
During the meeting, City staff will present the community with its official Firewise recognition and discuss the work completed to achieve the designation. The presentation will highlight the community wildfire risk assessment, neighborhood action plan, resident outreach, and volunteer efforts that made recognition possible.
"This recognition belongs to the residents and Firewise leadership team at Laguna Lake Mobile Estates," said Joe Little, Emergency Manager and Public Information Officer for the San Luis Obispo Fire Department. "Over the past several months, they have dedicated countless volunteer hours to learning about wildfire risk, engaging their neighbors, and developing a plan to make their community more resilient. Firewise is successful because it is driven by residents who are committed to protecting one another, and Laguna Lake Mobile Estates is a great example of what can be accomplished when a neighborhood comes together with a common purpose."
The meeting will also focus on what comes next. Firewise recognition is renewed annually and requires neighborhoods to remain engaged through continued education, mitigation projects, volunteer activities, and ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire risk. Residents will learn about future projects, opportunities to participate, and how maintaining Firewise recognition helps build a stronger, more resilient neighborhood.
Firewise USA, a program of the National Fire Protection Association, encourages neighborhoods to take meaningful action to reduce the risk of homes being damaged or destroyed by wildfire. Communities earn recognition by organizing residents, conducting a wildfire risk assessment, developing a multi-year action plan, investing volunteer time in wildfire mitigation activities, and committing to continued annual engagement.
The City of San Lius Obispo has continued to expand neighborhood-based wildfire preparedness through the Firewise program. Following the recognition of San Luis Drive in June, Laguna Lake Mobile Estates becomes the City's third recognized Firewise community. Together, these neighborhoods are helping create a more wildfire-resilient San Luis Obispo through community collaboration, education, defensible space improvements, home hardening, and emergency preparedness.
