As San Luis Obispo prepares to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day, community members are invited to come together in Mission Plaza early on Friday, July 3, for a day filled with music, art, history, and hometown pride.

The holiday is an opportunity to celebrate the values that make our community special: connection, belonging, diversity, and respect for one another.

Whether you're a lifelong local, a student, a visitor, or new to the community, there’s a place for you in the celebration.

As we honor our nation’s history and look toward its future, the City also recognizes the importance of creating a safe, welcoming environment where everyone can enjoy the festivities. By celebrating responsibly, looking out for one another, and choosing legal alternatives to fireworks, the community can ensure this milestone anniversary is memorable for all the right reasons.

Here are a few ways to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day on Friday, July 3, in San Luis Obispo:

• Ride the Old SLO Trolley (12 – 8 PM): Take a step back in time and ride the Old SLO Trolley. The trolley operates on a 30-minute loop connecting downtown SLO with the Upper Monterey business district before returning downtown. The best part? Trolley rides are free, sponsored by Rideshare’s Know How to Go program. 
  
  
• Concerts in the Plaza Festival & Block Party (1:45 – 8 PM): Kick off the holiday weekend at Mission Plaza in the early afternoon on Friday. This free, family-friendly event doubles as the official 30th anniversary celebration of Concerts in the Plaza. Start at the Plaza Stage at 1:45 p.m. for a special reading of the Declaration of Independence by City Council members and remarks by Mayor Erica A. Stewart, then stay for five bands, six hours of live music on two stages, fun activities, food, drinks and more. To accommodate the two stages, plus vendors and art installations, a portion of Broad Street will be closed to vehicle traffic. • Art After Dark (5 – 8 PM): Mosey beyond Mission Plaza to local galleries, businesses, and organizations throughout downtown for Art After Dark. Celebrate local creativity and enjoy visual exhibitions, live music, and community gatherings with this free, self-guided art walk in downtown San Luis Obispo. 
  
  
• SLO Blues Baseball’s Fireworks Show (9 - 10 PM): Head down to Sinsheimer Park for the only permitted fireworks show in San Luis Obispo happening after the game. While the baseball game is sold out and tickets will not be sold at the door, community members can still view the fireworks in Sinsheimer Park. Other fireworks celebrations on the Central Coast can be found online.

FIREWORKS PROHIBITED: AVOID PENALTIES & FINES
The San Luis Obispo Police and Fire Departments would like to remind everyone that fireworks, including “safe and sane” types, are prohibited within City limits. This includes fireworks legally purchased elsewhere.

Possessing or using fireworks in the City of San Luis Obispo can result in fines of up to $2,000 per violation, and individuals may also be held financially responsible for the cost of emergency response. To report non-emergency fireworks activity in the City, call the 24/7 dispatch line at (805) 781-7312. Dial 9-1-1 only to report emergencies such as fire, injury, or smoke.

REMINDERS TO KEEP SLO SAFE DURING CELEBRATIONS
Fireworks can be distressing for pets, veterans, and those with sensory sensitivities. They also pose a serious risk to dry vegetation and open space areas. Please share this message with guests and visitors in your neighborhoods, including those staying in vacation rentals.
