City staff are proposing a change to the South Street and King Court Crossing Project, replacing the previously planned pedestrian hybrid beacon with a standard traffic signal. 

The proposed modification is supported by feedback received from nearby residents and recent traffic data indicating that a traffic signal is warranted in this location. This change reflects both community priorities and the City’s goal of enhancing pedestrian safety and vehicle access at the intersection. 

Improvements to the South Street and King Court intersection are supported by the City’s adopted Active Transportation Plan and Vision Zero policies to improve safety for all road users, particularly on primary routes to school. The project will improve connectivity to nearby Meadow Park, Hawthorne Elementary School, the King-Nipomo Neighborhood Greenway, and nearby residences. 

While early phases of construction are already underway, City Council will consider the proposed change at its June 16, 2026, meeting. Approval at this meeting would allow the necessary design and equipment updates to move forward promptly, minimizing impacts to the community, helping to avoid construction delays and maintaining the $500,000 in outside grant funding supporting this project, as provided by the San Luis Council of Governments (SLOCOG).

Keeping the Community Informed
The City is taking proactive steps to ensure nearby residents and community members are aware of the proposed project modification and have an opportunity to learn more before the City Council Meeting on June 16, 2026. 

• Mailed Notices: Postcards with information about the proposed change and upcoming Council discussion will be mailed to residents and property owners within 1,000 feet of the intersection.
• On-Site Notifications: Beginning next week, signs will be placed near the intersection to alert pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers about the proposed modification as well as the June 16 City Council meeting.
• Direct Communication: Community members who have previously contacted the City regarding the project, including nearby homeowner's associations, will receive an email with information about the proposed change and Council consideration.

What Happens Next? 
Council will consider the proposed modification at its June 16, 2026, meeting. If approved, staff will work with the project contractor to update the design and proceed with installation of a standard traffic signal. This approach seeks to address community feedback while continuing to improve safety and maintain progress on the project. Remaining construction is targeted to begin late summer/early fall 2026 and be completed by end of 2026. The City will provide regular updates to the community on project status and schedule in the coming months.
