The City of San Luis Obispo has published a step-by-step guide for anyone considering running for Mayor or City Council Member in the November 3, 2026 Election.

San Luis Obispo’s 2026 Candidate Handbook is now available online at www.slocity.org/Elections. 

“We know the election process can seem daunting, especially if you have never run for office before, and we want to make sure everyone feels welcome and fully supported in exploring public service,” City Clerk Teresa Purrington said. “We encourage anyone interested in running for a City Council position this year to review the Candidate Handbook and reach out to the City Clerk’s Office with any questions.” 

For the November 3, 2026 Municipal Election, there are two positions open for Member of City Council (four-year terms) and one position open for Mayor (two-year term). Voters will cast one vote for Council Member and one vote for Mayor. The 2026 Candidate Handbook is designed to make the election process transparent, approachable and understandable. The handbook will help candidates navigate every stage of the election process, from nomination to Election Day.

The handbook includes:
• Clear explanations of how to run for Mayor or City Council, including nomination steps and key dates.
• Easy‑to-follow instructions for preparing a Candidate Statement of Qualifications, available in multiple languages upon request.
• Supportive guidance on campaign finance requirements, reporting responsibilities and where to find help.
• Information about accessibility, public records and equitable access to City resources throughout the campaign.
• Details about the City’s Code of Fair Campaign Practices, encouraging respectful, inclusive and community‑minded campaigning.

To help ensure equitable access to information, the City Clerk’s Office offers personalized assistance to anyone navigating the nomination or filing process and will also host a Candidate 

Orientation on July 13,2026 at 10:00 AM. Community members are also encouraged to sign up for City e‑notifications, which provide timely updates throughout the election season.
