The San Luis Obispo City Council held a public meeting on Tuesday June 2, 2026. Below is a recap of the meeting. Review the full recorded video and agenda packet.

The meeting began with the Mayor declaring June as Pride Month to celebrate and support LQBTQIA+ community members. Then the City Manager gave a brief presentation with updates on City affairs.

There were several routine matters on the Consent Agenda which the City Council approved with a single vote. These included:

• Adopting a project list for road maintenance to help improve infrastructure and safety needs.
• Authorizing and Funding plans to replace the Islay Street sewer line to mitigate risk factors and ensure the reliable and sufficient removal of wastewater.
• Adopting a new safety plan for SLO Transit to ensure that our transit system remains up to date and eligible for federal funding.
• Amending multiple titles of the Municipal Code to better meet housing needs for low income and special needs community members.

Council Adopts Balanced Budget for 2026-27 Fiscal Year

The City Council held a multi-hour discussion during its annual budget hearing. Ultimately, the Council adopted the City’s FY 2026-27 Budget, approving a balanced spending plan of about $224.7 million that will keep essential services running, maintain critical infrastructure, and continue investing in community priorities. For community members, this means continued funding for police, fire, parks, recreation programs, road maintenance, water and wastewater services, homelessness response efforts, and neighborhood improvements, while also preserving the City's financial stability and emergency reserves. The budget supports ongoing investments in major projects such as the Cultural Arts District Parking Structure, Mission Plaza improvements, transportation and safety projects, and other capital improvements throughout the city. As part of the discussion, the Council also reviewed policies that will guide a future user fee study and received an update on the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art’s planned downtown expansion. In short, the budget is designed to deliver the high-quality services the community relies on today while continuing to invest in San Luis Obispo’s future.

City Advisory Body Members to Receive Increased Parking Validation, Food for Meetings

The City Council discussed compensation for Advisory Body members and approved providing increased parking validations and a food budget to help reduce participation costs for volunteers. The Council chose not to expand monetary compensation to all Advisory Body members after reviewing a study that found it wasn’t feasible without creating significant administrative requirements and ongoing costs. However, the Council still wanted to reduce costs for participating in Advisory Body roles, so they opted to provide the parking validations and meeting snacks. This approach supports community members who serve on Advisory Bodies, removes some barriers to participation, and makes it easier for people to stay involved in local government while keeping costs low and preserving the volunteer nature of these roles.

The next City Council meeting will be a special meeting that takes place on Tuesday June 16, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers office at City Hall.
