Growing Code Enforcement Demands Require Future Updates
The City Council held a study session on the City’s growing code enforcement workload and priorities. After hearing from nearly 40 community members at the meeting and even more via email, the Council directed staff to move forward with several actions that will improve housing safety, neighborhood livability, and enforcement efficiency. The Council directed staff to keep current response priorities in place while exploring changes to the Code Enforcement fine structure, new rules for fraternity and sorority houses, and ways to improve operations as complaints that require a code enforcement response continue to rise. The discussion focused on protecting public health and safety while addressing issues like noise, nuisance complaints, and safe housing concerns. Any future changes to regulations or fines will involve opportunities for public input and additional public meetings.
Looking Ahead The next City Council meeting will include the City’s FY 2026-27 Budget Hearing and will take place on Tuesday June 2, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers office at City Hall.
