 SLO Transit Bus

As more riders rely on smartphones and digital tools to plan their trips, SLO Transit is implementing new technology to make riding the bus easier and more convenient. These upgrades will improve how passengers track buses in real time, find the best place to board, and pay their fares, creating a smoother experience from trip planning to arrival.

The new rider-focused technology includes enhanced real-time bus tracking, improved trip planning tools, and modern fare payment options designed to reduce barriers and improve access for all users. These improvements will help create a more reliable and user-friendly transit system, support the next generation of transit riders, and make it easier to provide discounted fares and reduced-cost passes for eligible community members.

To ensure a seamless experience across the region, SLO Transit is coordinating these improvements with regional partners, including San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (RTA), San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG), Cal Poly, and local social service providers. This collaborative approach will help create a more connected and accessible public transportation network for the entire community.

What’s new and coming soon for SLO Transit

New Transit App (April 2026)
SLO Transit is now supporting Transit as its new real-time bus tracking app, providing riders with a simple and reliable way to view live bus arrivals, trip planning options, and service updates directly from their smartphones. The app offers accurate, real-time vehicle locations, step-by-step navigation, and rider alerts, helping passengers better plan when and where to catch the bus. By adopting Transit, SLO Transit is improving the overall rider experience with a modern, user-friendly tool that supports seamless travel across the region while making public transportation more accessible and convenient for both current and future riders. Current SLO Transit users should note that the SLO Transit app will be discontinued as part of this change.

New Contactless Payment System (May 2026)

SLO Transit is also launching Tap2Ride a new contactless payment system that allows riders to pay their fare by simply tapping a contactless debit or credit card, including Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, as well as mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay when boarding the bus. This modern payment option reduces the need for cash, paper tickets, and separate transit passes, making boarding faster and more convenient for both daily riders and visitors. Riders who qualify for reduced fares will also be able to access discounts through the system, helping make transit more affordable and accessible. By introducing Tap2Ride in coordination with regional partners across San Luis Obispo County, SLO Transit is creating a more seamless and connected transit experience for the entire community.

New Text to Ride System (Summer 2026)
SLO Transit is also implementing Ride Text, a new text-based rider communication tool to make transit information more accessible for passengers without requiring a smartphone app. Ride Text allows riders to simply text a bus stop number to receive real-time bus arrival information, route details, and service updates directly by SMS. This feature provides a fast and convenient option for passengers at the stop, helping reduce uncertainty and wait times while improving access for riders who prefer text messaging over mobile apps. By adding Ride Text alongside the new Transit platform, SLO Transit is expanding access to real-time information and creating a more inclusive, user-friendly transit experience for the community.

“Our top priority is making public transit as simple, reliable, and convenient as possible for our community,” said Alex Fuchs, Mobility Services Business Manager. “By investing in real-time bus tracking, text-based arrival information, and contactless fare payment, we’re giving riders better tools to plan their trips and move through our community with ease. These technology upgrades help improve access, reduce barriers, and create a more seamless transit experience for everyone who rides SLO Transit.”
