Volunteers gather for an appreciation lunch hosted by the City.

Volunteers were celebrated yesterday at a Volunteer Appreciation Lunch hosted by the City of San Luis Obispo.

On April 16, 2026 at Mitchell Park, City staff and officials thanked and recognized the community members who gave their time and energy this past year to support City programs, services, and events.

“Volunteers are at the heart of what makes San Luis Obispo such a remarkable place,” said City Manager Whitney McDonald. “Their time, energy, and passion help strengthen our community in ways that truly make a difference. Every time volunteers serve the community, they build bridges and create connections – sometimes literally and sometimes figuratively. Volunteers make our community stronger, more connected and more welcoming for all. We can’t thank them enough for everything they do.”

The event recognized the vital role volunteers play in helping create a more vibrant, inclusive, and supportive community. From maintaining parks and open spaces to supporting public events and City programs, volunteers serve alongside staff to advance key City goals and enhance quality of life for residents.

The impact of the City’s Volunteer Program continues to grow. Last year, an average of 152 volunteers every month helped to beautify San Luis Obispo, keep it clean, build hiking trails, support events, provide recycling information, and so much more.

Together, they contributed more than 8,600 hours in service to the community. Last quarter, 117 volunteers were activated across 12 City teams, contributing more than 2,100 hours of service.

The City’s Volunteer Program connects community members with meaningful opportunities to serve, build connections, and contribute to projects that benefit the entire community.

Through a wide range of accessible and flexible opportunities, the program helps expand the City’s capacity while fostering a strong sense of belonging and shared responsibility among residents.

Anyone interested in getting involved is encouraged to explore opportunities through the City’s volunteer portal, Engage SLO. There are a wide range of flexible opportunities available, from one-day service projects to ongoing roles supporting City programs and initiatives.
