The City of San Luis Obispo will officially open the new Cultural Arts District Parking Garage on March 17 at 8:00 a.m., offering free parking for the first 28 days from March 17 to April 13, 2026.
“This is the largest downtown infrastructure investment the City has ever made, and we invite the community to take advantage of this opportunity to park at no cost in the new garage and familiarize themselves with this new gateway to the downtown,” said City Manager Whitney McDonald. “This investment will set the stage for a vibrant Cultural Arts District downtown, will support a variety of transportation options for downtown visitors and employees, and will provide safe overnight parking options for downtown residents.”
The new public parking garage is located at 609 Palm Street, on the corner of Nipomo and Palm Streets, and adds nearly 400 parking spaces, 41 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, 14 bike lockers and 16 bike parking spacesto support downtown businesses, cultural venues, residents and visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Along with new vehicle parking spaces, the garage includes rooftop solar panels to offset energy use and underground utilities to improve reliability, safety, and the surrounding streetscape. A real-time parking guidance system will help drivers quickly find available spaces. The rooftop event space is not yet open to the public; more details about reserving the space will be made available sometime this summer.
The City invested about $43 million in the construction of this project, representing the City’s largest infrastructure investment in downtown San Luis Obispo. The facility serves as the fourth public parking structure operated by the City’s Parking Services team. The City began building the Cultural Arts District Parking Garage in November 2023 after more than 20 years of public engagement, planning and design. The purpose of this project is to increase transportation options for downtown and support a vibrant Cultural Arts District, including the Children’s Museum, History Center, the future SLO Rep Theatre and the expanding SLO Museum of Art.
Parking Rates and Validation
Parking rates at this garage will be the same as other downtown public parking garages: $2 per hour, with a daily maximum of $8. Monthly garage permits are available for $45 and provide unlimited access to all downtown garages. EV charging spaces will include an additional charging fee of $0.50 per kWh.
To support downtown businesses, the City offers a garage parking validation program. Local businesses can purchase discounted garage parking validations for their customers, making it easier for patrons to enjoy all that downtown has to offer. Simply ask the business you’re visiting whether they provide parking validation for City parking garages.
