The San Luis Obispo City Council met on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 and held a nearly 5-hour study session on a possible rental registry in San Luis Obispo. Review the full recorded video and agenda packet.
City to Explore Mandatory Rental Registry
Nearly two-thirds of households in San Luis Obispo are renters, and the City currently lacks complete, reliable data about the local rental market and a well-designed registry could help the City better understand this information. City staff presented information about rental registries, and three options for a potential future registry, and more than two dozen community members spoke on the topic, resulting in about 1.5 hours of public comment. While the Council did not take formal action, it directed staff to further study the third option presented: a program that would require all rental properties to register with the City. The Council asked staff to research what it would take to create a mandatory rental registry in San Luis Obispo, including reaching out to other cities that have successful programs. City staff will outline a local program structure, software solutions, estimated costs, staffing needs, timeline, and potential fee structure and incorporate this into a work program item for the Fiscal Year 2027-2029 Budget.
