TYPE OF INCIDENT:  Arrest for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Resisting Arrest and Assault on a Peace Officer

PLACE OF OCCURRENCE: Laguna Lake Park, 500 block of Madonna Road

SUSPECT: Jyerick Zane Nebeker, 30 years old, transient of San Luis Obispo

VICTIM: 51-year-old male, resident of San Luis Obispo

DETAILS:

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, San Luis Obispo Police Department received several 911 calls reporting a male at Laguna Lake Park attempting to assault other parkgoers. Callers reported the male had scissors or a knife and was threatening another person on a park trail.

When officers arrived at the park, witnesses told them the male had also picked up a large rock and threw it at the victim. The rock didn’t hit the victim, and the male picked it up again and began to follow the victim. Officers located the male who was holding a pair of scissors and attempted to detain him, but he ran and refused to comply with officer's commands. To attempt to take the male into custody, a rubber baton projectile round and pepper spray were used but after being struck, the male jumped into the south end of Laguna Lake to attempt to hide in the reeds and refused to come out.

The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office K-9 was requested to assist with removing the male from the reeds surrounding Laguna Lake. As the K-9 went into the reeds after the suspect, the male began to hit the dog, and officers intervened and arrested him on the shore.

The male, identified as 30-year-old Jyerick Nebeker, sustained a dog bite to his left leg and was later taken to a local hospital for treatment. While at the hospital, Nebeker continued to fight and spit into the face of one of the officers. After being medically cleared, Nebeker was booked in San Luis Obispo County Jail on the following charges:

PC 245 (A)(4) - Felony Assault, Great Bodily Injury

PC 69(A) - Felony Resisting Arrest

PC 3455(B)(1) - Felony Probation Violation

PC 243(B) - Misdemeanor Battery on a Peace Officer

PC 417(A)(1) - Misdemeanor Brandishing a Deadly Weapon

PC 600(B) - Misdemeanor Harming a Peace Officer Dog

Bail was denied for Nebeker, he will remain in custody until the conclusion of his court proceedings.
