Applications Open Now for 2026 Community Academy

Apply to join SLO’s free Community Academy Class of 2026. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Community members interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look at how their local government works are invited to apply for the Community Academy Class of 2026. Applications are now open at www.slocity.org/Academy.

This program is open to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in San Luis Obispo (ages 18+, or with parent/guardian consent). Space is limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This is an exciting to go behind the scenes of your local government and learn how it works,” said Natalie Harnett, City Policy and Projects Manager. “Class members will meet the people who make decisions and gain the knowledge to be a more informed and engaged community member.”

The Community Academy is a free public program provided by the City every two years. This year, the program will have six focused sessions from March 9 through April 13, 2026, every Monday evening (5:30 to 8 p.m.), with dinner provided. Participants will get to connect with City Council members and department heads, build connections with fellow community members, and deepen their understanding of community issues.

Session topics include city government basics, technology and sustainability, water and streets, parks, public safety, and City Council & elections.

“When they graduate, the Class of 2026 will have a clear, practical understanding of how decisions are made, how funds are allocated, and how City departments serve the community,” Harnett said. “The program also offers optional, exclusive tours and hands-on learning you don’t get at a typical meeting.”
