Celebrating SLO Transit Day: Honoring Community Connections and Expanded Service

August 20, 2025, marks SLO Transit Day, a celebration of the essential role public transportation plays in connecting people, places, and opportunities throughout San Luis Obispo.

Each year, SLO Transit supports students, workers, families, and visitors by helping reduce traffic, improve air quality, and strengthen community connections. This day is dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments of SLO Transit, its riders, and its contribution to the City’s climate and mobility goals.

As part of this year’s celebration, the City is announcing the return of extended academic service hours beginning Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
 
By the Numbers: SLO Transit’s Impact

  • 598,000 rides annually across the city
  • 36,900 hours of bus service provided each year
  • 375,000 miles of service annually, easing traffic downtown
  • Over 57,000 kgs of CO emissions saved each year with 2 battery electric buses and 8 more on order, over half the fleet will be zero-emissions by the end of 2026
  • 60% of riders are Cal Poly students, faculty, and staff - highlighting strong university-community connections.

 
SLO Transit Resumes Extended Academic Service Hours in September
Beginning on Tuesday, September 2, SLO Transit will return to its academic year schedule, offering longer evening service hours. And beginning on Thursday, September 25, SLO Transit will resume the 6 Express service on Thursday nights, a direct connection from Cal Poly’s campus to the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market. The extended schedule provides more evening options across fixed routes and helps meet the city’s growing transportation needs.
 
Weekday Service Hours

  • 1A: 6:15 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
  • 1B: 6:45 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
  • 2A: 6:15 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
  • 2B: 6:45 a.m. – 6:35 p.m.
  • 3A: 6:20 a.m. – 11:10 p.m.
  • 3B: 6:45 a.m. – 10:35 p.m.
  • 4A: 6:00 a.m. – 11:05 p.m.
  • 4B: 6:15 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.

 
Weekend Service Hours

  • 1A: 8:15 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • 2A: 8:15 a.m. – 8:05 p.m.
  • 3A: 8:20 a.m. – 8:10 p.m.
  • 4A: 8:15 a.m. – 8:05 p.m.

 
6 Express Service
The 6 Express runs from Cal Poly to Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market 6:00 p.m. – 9:20 p.m. on Thursdays during the academic year.

By making transit a convenient choice, we help keep our city moving while easing traffic and supporting our climate goals.”

SLO Transit is the City of San Luis Obispo’s public transportation system, offering the community a convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly way to travel. Discount programs are available for qualifying riders, including the Downtown Access Pass, which provides free city bus passes to downtown employees to help reduce parking demand.
 
Riders are encouraged to plan ahead using the SLO Transit App, the Rider Portal (web version), or printed schedules available at the Finance Office, City Clerk’s Office, Chamber of Commerce, and Mobility Services Office at 1260 Chorro Street, Suite B.
