Future Water : Supply

Planning for the Future |
|
The City is working to provide water for present and future
community needs, and to create a “reliability reserve” for use
in future possible emergencies. Three supply project options,
Nacimiento Pipeline Project, Water Reuse,
and Salinas Reservoir Expansion Project,
are being pursued to meet these goals.
A discussion of water needs would be incomplete without mention
of water conservation, a
cornerstone of the City’s water management strategy. When
planning for future water needs, the City must estimate what
level of conservation the community will achieve. When water
conservation measures like low flow shower heads and toilets,
and water-efficient landscaping are used, the demand for future
water supplies is eased. While City residents have dramatically
reduced water use, conservation alone cannot meet all of the
future water needs of the City.

Nacimiento Water Supply Project |
|
Leading the way as the City’s number one current water supply
project, the Nacimiento project is being developed to serve the
future needs of the North County cities, San Luis Obispo,
Cayucos, and several unincorporated areas around San Luis
Obispo.
Since 1959, the San Luis Obispo County Flood Control and Water
Conservation District (District) has had rights to 17,500
acre-feet per year (afy) of Nacimiento water for use in San Luis
Obispo County. The County is now moving forward on the 50+ mile
pipeline project to deliver Nacimiento water to the 18
participating agencies and cities. The City of SLO has requested
3,380 afy of water from the Nacimiento project. City of SLO

Water
Reuse Project |
The City’s Water Reuse Project will recycle water for irrigation
of parks, golf courses, schools and other public areas. A
detailed description of this process and project are included
under Water Reuse.

Salinas Reservoir Expansion Project |
The proposed project would install a new operable gate in the
spillway of the Salinas Dam which would increase the storage
capacity in the lake by 75%. Expansion of the storage capacity
would increase the amount of water available to the City by
1,650 acre-feet per year. Contact: Gary Henderson, 805-781-7237.
