Visual Arts in Public Places Program
The
City currently has a Visual Arts in Public Places program which
encourages public art in new and existing buildings, parks, streets and
other development projects for the enjoyment of its citizens and
visitors. For most of its capital projects, the City sets aside 1% of
the construction cost for
public art. Projects which are not suitable for
public
art contribute 1% of their construction cost to a city-wide fund which
is used to support other worthwhile public art projects.
The City also has an ordinance in place requiring the placement of
public art, valued at 1/2% of the total construction cost, on privately
funded, non-residential
construction projects costing in excess of
$100,000.
An additional and important source of public art is that which is
privately funded, but located in a public place. The City has been
the recipient of several excellent pieces that were obtained through the
private donation program.
The
ARTS Obispo,
San Luis Obispo County Arts Council is developing a local
registry and has an
extensive site full of
information
regarding funding, displays and locations. If you want more information
regarding the Arts Council, contact them at either 805.544.9251 or
