Glynis Chaffin-Tinglof - 805.528.0547
gtinglof@earthlink.com

"Glynis Chaffin-Tinglof began painting as a way of finding a connection with her father who died suddenly when she was 16 years old.  With the help of artist Andy Bretthauer and encouragement from her mother, a musician and sculptor, Glynis began the exciting and often frustrating journey of teaching herself oil painting.

Inspired by nature and her love of the outdoors, Glynis first concentrated on landscape paintings and floral still lifes.  Within a short time, she began showing her work around Bay Area restaurants and cafes.  Her work turned toward a more abstract style after an epiphany moment.  "Standing in front of a series of Diebenkorn paintings at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I realized I needed to experiment with abstract images.  I've always loved landscapes, so I paired the two, focusing on aerial perspectives.  That's when I really began to have fun painting."

Trude Kyle - 805.544.5721

Trude Kyle began painting as a hobby in 1978.  With no formal training or even a lesson, her inspiration came from her mentor, Gertrude Owens, whose encouragement led Trude to discover her passion for painting.  Trude's travels to Greece, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Cuba quickly became her palette for beautiful landscapes to paint.

When Trude started playing golf ten years ago, she realized that some of the most beautiful and tranquil scenery was on the golf course.  She began painting pictures of her favorite courses.  According to Trude, "The Central Coast is a remarkable and breathtaking abundance of scenery."

Gregory C. Simmons - 805.556.0370

Not realizing at any early age how he was viewing his surroundings perhaps a little differently than others around him, Gregory Simmons soon began to understand that this was his creative side starting to take form.  With an interest in drawing and painting to follow, Greg began his career as an artist.

Several master artists from the past have influenced Greg's direction.  Those include Andrew Wyeth, with his egg tempera technique of applying very small transparent strokes of paint, to Maxfield Parrish with his illuminating layers of color.  Now after many years of painting with acrylics, Greg feels that he has established his own technique that will separate his work from others.

According to Greg, "For the viewer of my work now, it's important to have fun with color and seeing objects that I see but with a twist on reality.  Maybe you too will look at the world in a different way."

Judy Schuster - 805.927.1976
judysarts@earthlink.net

Judy Schuster has been creating and exhibiting tapestries in group and solo exhibitions for over 25 years.  She has been honored to have work included in juried international exhibitions in France, Germany, Australia and Canada.  Schuster's education includes a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from California State University, Long Beach, a Bachelor's Degree in Textiles from Cornell University, post-graduate studies in computer graphics at the University of California Los Angeles, and intensive study at the San Francisco Tapestry Workshop.

"The subject of my work is duality - the mysteries and ambiguities, and the conflicts and complements arising from opposites, within one person or between people.  I'm exploring various ways of presenting duality.  Recent tapestries have images on separate planes.  Depending on where you stand to look at each piece, you can see different combinations of the faces.  The images are physically distinct and separate, yet mix or fuse or blur as you move, suggesting dynamic relationships."

Jamie Hodoian - 805.704.8544
pantherpaw@charter.net

"Though not born on the Central Coast, my heart has always belonged here.  A few years ago, my husband and I followed our hearts' dream, and we now live in Morro Bay, surrounded by nature Herself.  We couldn't feel more content and fortunate to be here.  The art of photography caught my interest many years ago, probably because through this medium, real moments of time can be isolated and immortalized.  Taking the individual parts of certain subjects and seeing how they contribute to the whole, has always been a fascination for me.  Photography has helped open my eyes to the overflowing beauty in our world, and this is what I hope to pass on through my pictures.  Capturing, preserving and even honoring the individual components that add up to that wondrous concept we call life."

James A. Crawford - 805.544.1601
crawf@charter.net

Although James A. Crawford has been photographing since 1966, his work has only recently become available.  Crawford believes there is more to photography than looking through the camera and pressing the shutter.  He says, "The camera is only part of the process.  It's where your creativity leads in the darkroom, or the computer.  It is not a mere image, it is an extension of your whole self.  I take little pieces from everything and everyone and melt it into my own vision and truth, whether that's from architecture, sculpture, painting, music, photography or literature."  Crawford is the recipient of first place ribbons and Best of Show awards in several photograph shows and publications and has been displayed at Cal Poly, Johnson Gallery, The Photoshop, San Luis Artists' Gallery and San Luis Obispo County Art Center.  James has been a winner in all five years of the New Times Photography Contest, including five winning images in 1999.

Dorothy Riggs - 805.595.7460
artstudio@dorothyriggs.com

"The creative process of painting serves several profound purposes for me. It's an open-eyed meditation, a playground for the inner child of my psyche: a time and place for ultimate freedom and imagination to come alive. I choose to work in oils because I find it more sensual and luxurious than other media. I love the explosion of color, texture, abstraction and curvilinear forms. These anesthetic principles are incorporated into my work. I paint in a direct mode, without preplanning. This keeps the imagery fresh and brings forth icons of the subconscious realm, executed boldly and with passion.  Aligning myself with these "innerscapes" facilitates personal growth and self-healing. Art becomes the essential tool, which allows the expression and integration of feelings and ideas."

Peg Grady - 805.438.3912
peggrady5250@yahool.com

"I refuse to paint the same painting for the rest of my life.  Every piece is something new.  My work is constantly changing.  I paint primarily in acrylics, but use collage, pencil, gels, paste, sand and found objects.  Experimentation is the key.

My paintings are built up in many layers, forms are obliterated, restructured and reinforced several times during the course of painting until a composition emerges.  I weave symbols, realistic and abstract elements, rich layered textures together to create an environment where these elements live in the layers of paint and collage, where the effects of time can be discovered.  I experiment with colors; sometimes my work is flooded with light, at other times dark and mysterious.  I want people to be moved emotionally when they see my work.

I can only hope that people enjoy looking at my work as much as I enjoy creating it."

Mary MENG Wade - 805.543.7666

Mary MENG Wade ... or simply MENG, her abbreviated signature, is a California artist with a very special viewpoint.  Her works show a deep involvement with the expressive impact of color as a state of being.  "For me, color creates both form and line.  Color dictates the direction in which a painting will go.  I work with oils because the medium makes possible a subtle meditative process while painting.  There is an organic quality in the growth of a painting, the need for time to elapse so that a direction that was not there yesterday becomes apparent today.  Each day is a different place in time that has never been before and will never be again.  So the layers of paint are a capturing of these moments in the personal psyche."
