Community Academy
"The Making of a City"
September 25 - November 15

"The Making of a City will provide the residents of San Luis Obispo an inside look at the public policy process.  This in turn will foster an environment where residents and government officials work in conjunction to increase the quality of life that we all enjoy in San Luis Obispo."

Ken Hampian, City Administrative Officer

Would you like to know how your City government works?  Would you like to learn more about how the City's budget is developed, the relationship between the City Administrative Officer (CAO) and the City Council, or the basic functions of the Community Development Department?

For answers to these types of questions and others, apply to the 2008 Community Academy, "The Making of the City", an educational program that provides the citizens of San Luis Obispo with the opportunity to gain additional knowledge about municipal government.

Like the making of a movie, "The Making of a City" requires the efforts of many players, each with a special role.  Classes will help participants understand these roles and how they interact to form a strong and effective government body.  Sessions range from City organization and funding to police and fire services, and will culminate in a mock City Council meeting that will apply everything learned.

Classes will be held on seven consecutive Thursday evenings (or as noted) from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.  A field trip, graduation ceremony and lunch will be held on the Saturday morning following the last class session.

There is no fee to attend the Academy, however, class size will be limited so early registration is encouraged.  Classes are open to all City residents of voting age.  Due to limited space, attendance at all sessions is expected.

We encourage you to apply for the program.  If you have further questions about the Community Academy, please contact Barbara Ehrbar at behrbar@slocity.org or call 805-781-7055.
