Non-Smoking and Cigarette Sales Ordinances

No Smoking SymbolThe Administration Department responds to questions and enforcement issues relating to its Non-Smoking and Cigarette Sales Ordinances. Since 1990 the City has prohibited smoking in most public places, including bars and restaurants. To our knowledge, we were the first city in the United States to do so. Enforcement of this ordinance is triggered by a complaint to the City. In 1992 the City passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of cigarettes or other tobacco products from vending machines. And in 1997 the City also passed an ordinance which prohibits both the sale of tobacco products to minors and self-service displays of tobacco products.

Questions or complaints concerning violations of these ordinances can be made to City by calling 805-781-7151.
