Cartography Exhibits
In theory, cartography is the study and
practice of making geographical maps by combining science,
aesthetics, and technique to represent reality in ways that
communicate spatial information effectively.
In practice, cartography is about making good
maps, and the measure of a good map is how well it conveys information
that enlivens, convinces, or persuades its readers.
The GIS Division continues an initiative intended to promote the value and importance of cartography to the
practice of GIS at the City. Two of the maps we displayed at the Map
Gallery during ESRI's 2009 User Conference in San Diego received
awards for Best Cartographic Design for a Map Series or Atlas.
