Graffiti Program

Unfortunately, San Luis Obispo is not immune from incidents of graffiti vandalism. Black markers, spray paint, etching of glass, and other similar acts do occasionally take place. The most effective strategy to combat this type of crime is to remove the damage immediately; in fact, the law requires removal. Any person, firm, or corporation owning, leasing, occupying or having possession of any private property who refuses to remove graffiti from their property is guilty of an infraction and may be fined for each day the graffiti remains.

What do I do if I am the victim of a graffiti vandal?

Notify the San Luis Obispo Police Department at 805.781.7317. Tell the Communications Technician the location, type of damage and your name and address. The Communication Technician will dispatch a police officer if available to record the incident.

Immediately remove the graffiti once the officer has completed the investigation. Local paint and hardware stores have certain solutions that may help you remove the damage. It is always advisable to keep an extra can of your building’s paint color available for use.

How do I report graffiti on other people’s property?

Call the Graffiti Hotline 805.783.STOP (7867) and report the exact location. Please give street address or, if in a block, the nearest cross street and the exact location and type of graffiti. Please leave your name and a call back phone number in case the Graffiti Abatement Officer needs to contact you.
