MAY EVENTS
In April our
students had fun when they experienced the fatal vision goggles
while participated in several activities. The students wore the
goggles and were surprised and shocked to feel the simulated effects
that a small amount of alcohol could have on the body and how it
affects co-ordination, balance and overall control body control.
Now we are into the month of May we are starting a review of the
material covered and the preparing for the upcoming DARE
graduations. This month we will be celebrating the graduation of the
6th grade classes at C.L Smith, Bishops Peak, Teach School and
Sinsheimer School. More than ever students will be graduating and
just in this month alone we will be graduating over 150 students.
Congratulation to all the graduating students who have worked very
hard and have participated in class lectures and submitted a DARE
essay detailing what they have learned and how DARE will effect
their lives.
Next month we will be looking forward to the end of the school year
and to safe happy and enjoyable summer.

DARE
(Drug Abuse
Resistance Education) is a highly acclaimed program that gives kids
the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs and
violence.
DARE was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and is implemented in 75% of
our nation’s schools and more than 43 countries around the world.
The DARE program is a series of officer-led classroom lessons
lasting 10 weeks. The areas covered during the program include
health issued and facts about Tobacco, Alcohol, Inhalants and
Methamphetamine and other stimulants. Other lessons include
friendship foundations, peer pressure and ways to make good
decisions.
The San Luis Obispo Police Department has been dedicated to serving
the community through DARE for over 15 years and this school year
will be teaching in six San Luis Obispo Coastal Unified School
District Elementary Schools within our city.
This year the D.A.R.E. program will be taught at Pacheco, Hawthorne
schools during the first half of the school year and at Bishop’s
Peak, Teach and C.L. Smith and Sinsheimer schools during the second
half.
Parent support is encouraged and is an important part of our
program. D.A.R.E. is a tool parents can use to open
discussion about the importance of staying drug-free.
In order to complete the program and graduate a student
must:
-Complete a D.A.R.E. workbook
-Have good attendance and demonstrate good behavior
during class
-Write an essay to express what they have learned in the
D.AR.E. program
-Stay drug-free
After the successful completion of the program a graduation
ceremony will be scheduled at their school and all parents
are encouraged to attend and support their child.
