SCHOOL YEAR 2008-09 ACTIVITIES

Program X

Program X is a safe, FUN, and supervised after-school program offered Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Room G-5. This is a place for students to complete homework, socialize, and be creative in a positive atmosphere. All participants must have a waiver signed by a parent/guardian. Cost is $10 for the entire school year.

Requirement: This program is open to all students in 7th and 8th grades.  All participants must have a waiver signed by a parent/guardian to attend.  

Teen Hang Out


Teen Hang Out Logo
Teens looking for a place to go out on Friday nights, this is the answer! Teen Hang Out, located at 1445 Santa Rosa at Meadow Park, provides seventh and eighth graders a safe place to socialize with friends, dance while the DJ plays favorite songs and just hang out. Concessions are available with healthy options. Cost is $3 with an ASB card. Call the City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department at 781-7300, visit on-line at www.slocity.org/parksandrecreation, or drop by the Administrative Offices.

Requirements: All participants must have a completed waiver or permission slip signed by a parent or guardian. Waivers can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation Department or at Laguna Middle School. Waivers are also available online as a PDF file.

Upcoming dates for 2009 Teen Hang Outs: Friday, February 27, Friday, March 27 and Friday, May 29.

SCHOOL YEAR 2008-09 ACTIVITIES

Quest (formerly City Corps) at the Ludwick Community Center

Take on the challenge and participate in this amazing work training session for teens 14-16 years old. In this program, teens learn job ethics and responsibility while given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. QUEST is based on the principle of “Teens Engaged Achieve Milestones” or T.E.A.M.  During the training session, QUEST teens participate in T.E.A.M. building and cooperative goals. Activities include participation in a ropes course challenge, guided adventures in downtown San Luis Obispo and other interactive games and sessions. Volunteer hours are included as one component of the challenge. Summer 2009 program dates are as follows: Monday, June 15 through Thursday, June 18, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Teen Idol 2009

Teen Idol 2009 LogoLet the brightest stars shine with a night of entertainment and showmanship. San Luis Obispo TEEN IDOL 2009 celebrates and encourages future stars seeking to showcase talents through several weeks of rehearsals and one finale performance. This amazing opportunity allows teens (13-18 years old) to enhance musical and dramatic skills in a positive venue that supports each participant. The Sixth Annual Teen Idol performance is scheduled for Friday, June 26 at the Ludwick Community Center at 7 p.m. Rehearsal dates begin Tuesday, May 28. This year’s Winner receives a $200 Visa gift card, Runner-Up receives a $100 Visa gift card and Third Place receives a $50 Visa gift card. All other participants of Teen Idol receive gifts and prizes from local businesses supporting the talents of local youth.

Dive In Pool Party at the SLO Swim Center

Celebrate the start of a great summer! The Dive In Pool Party at the SLO Swim Center is open to all those either in seventh and eighth grades or incoming freshman at San Luis Obispo High School. This special event at the SLO Swim Center will feature music, food, games and leisurely fun with friends. The SLO Swim Center is located in Sinsheimer Park, at the end of Southwood Drive (902 Southwood Drive). This “bash with a splash” will be an evening to remember, so come out and get your feet wet. Junior Giants at Santa Rosa Park 
 

Junior Giants is a FREE, non-competitive summer baseball program for girls and boys (ages 8-10 years and 11-13 years) sponsored by the Giants Community Fund and the City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department.

Sign-ups begin on May 4 and end on June 16, 2009. The Junior Giants season runs Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 30 to August 6. This season, Junior Giants will accommodate a maximum of 75 participants and offer one session from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for ages 8-13 years old. There is MANDATORY Parent Orientation Meeting on Wednesday, June 24. If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer coach, please contact the City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation department at 781-7300.

Teen Dayz at Meadow Park 
 

The City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department has a wonderful summer program for teens in seventh through tenth grades. Teen Dayz at Meadow Park is a summer drop-in program offered Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Meadow Park beginning Monday, July 6, 2009 through Friday, August 21, 2009. Participants will have access to sports equipment and other special activities. This is a great place to socialize and hang out with friends. This program is supervised by Parks and Recreation Teen Program Staff and is FREE to all participants.

SLO Skate Park

The SLO Skate Park (located at Santa Rosa Park) presents skaters the opportunity to master skills, learn and work on new tricks, and have fun hanging out with peers.  The Skatelite Pro Park enables skaters to have a faster, smoother ride; blending the right elements of speed, friction, durability and pliability in a supreme riding surface.

Saturday: 12-7 p.m.

Closed Sundays, Mondays and all Legal Holidays.

Helmets are required.  The cost is $2.00 per person.  A signed waiver/release must be completed or on file prior to skating.  Waivers are available at the SLO Skate Park or at the Parks and Recreation Department Offices or online.

Seeking Teen Program Volunteers!

The Parks and Recreation Department is always seeking volunteers for programs and events, including coaches, leaders, referees, instructors, planners, organizers, supervisors, and much more.  If interested, fill out the Volunteer Opportunities Application or call (805) 781-7300 for a rewarding experience working with Teens.

Annually, volunteers are honored at a dinner recognizing achievements.  A volunteer of the year is chosen along with awards for volunteers who have reached certain pinnacles in volunteer efforts with the City.
