The City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department is earnestly working to provide new quality programs that promote health and wellness for "Boomers" (Adults 50+). These activities are designed to offer programs that bring the "Boomer" community together. Parks and Recreation's goal is to meet the leisure needs of the community and create socialization within each of the programs that are offered.  For more information, visit the FAQ page.

Have you read the latest Boomer Buzz? This monthly publication will inform you of the variety of opportunities offered through the San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department for active adults 50 and over!

Fitness Hiking Club: All hikes meet at designated trailheads at 8:30 a.m. Hike distances and times listed are approximate.  All hikes will be catered to the individual group.  Trails are clearly marked should someone want to turn around early or continue
             farther. For more information please contact Ranger Services at (805) 781-7302.

  • Monday, August 25 – Felsman Loop, Bishop Peak Open Space– directions

Health and Wellness Seminars at the Ludwick Community Center:
Organized by the Boomer and Senior Program Specialist, the Health and Wellness series is an informational set of free classes aimed to meet the interest of Boomers, though participants of all ages are welcomed to attend.  This free class is on Wednesdays at the Ludwick Community Center, 864 Santa Rosa St., from 12 pm until 1 pm.  Call 781-7282 for any questions regarding these seminars.  Upcoming seminars:

December 3 - The Five Secrets of Ultra Healthy

Indoor Volleyball:  Drop-in every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesdays from 7 pm - 9 pm to experience the fun of Indoor Volleyball at the Ludwick Community Center, 864 Santa Rosa St. This program is FREE.

Adult Drop-In Softball:  Bring a bat and glove and meet at Santa Rosa Park on Tuesdays from 10 am to 1 pm for a game of softball with others over 50!

Adult Drop-In Horseshoes:  The City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department is looking for participants to join in playing informal games of horse shoes at Santa Rosa Park, at Santa Rosa and Oak Street.  Games are played from 6 pm to 8 pm.  There is no charge for this activity.

"Round Table Readers":  Meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 7 pm-8:30 pm. Call 781-7282 for latest novel selection and location. 

Computer Partners:  Learn how to send email to friends and family.  Computer instruction is offered by educators from Cal Poly.  The class is free to Seniors and Boomers and is held at the Ludwick Community Center, 864 Santa Rosa. 

View from Bishop PeakRanger-Led Hikes:  Come join a City Ranger for senior and family hikes.  Hikers will learn about geology, vegetation and wildlife. This program is free. Call the Ranger Services Administrator at 781-7302 for more information or to set up a hike.  

Local Historical Walks:  Learn more about the City of San Luis Obispo on  local historical walks. Please call 781-7300 for more information.

Global Gourmet:  One Tuesday evening each month, culinary experts present cooking techniques and an introduction to new flavors and ingredients while offering delicious samples.  For each class, a chef from a local restaurant demonstrates how to prepare a specialty dish with participation from the audience.

Global Gourmet

Global Gourmet is held at the Ludwick Community Center Teaching Kitchen on Santa Rosa and Mill from 5 pm - 7 pm.  While this class is designed for Boomer participants, all community members are welcome. For more information, please call Jacob Broyles at 781-7068.

Special Events:  Keep the following Boomer Special Events marked on your calendar.

Family Day at the Jack House:  June 22, 2008, 1 pm - 4 pm. Delight in an afternoon filled with fun for the whole family!  Lawn games, refreshing snacks, and tours of the Jack House will be given during this event. The gardens at the Jack House provide a lovely backdrop where live music and an ice cream social will also be provided.  Cost for the event is $2.00 per person.

The Walking Group:  This group meets Wednesday mornings 9:30 am -10:30 am at Laguna Lake Park, Madonna Road at El Mercado, in the first parking lot on the left from the Dalidio Drive entrance. This program is free to all who want to walk and talk while improving cardiovascular fitness. Come to exercise and socialize each Wednesday morning while enjoying the beautiful outdoors. A stretching session and Healthy Tip of the Week are featured each week. Each walking trip allows for the exploration of the various landmarks, open space and recreational trails around the lake. Directions to Ranger-Led Hikes and Trail Workdays:

Bishop Peak Natural Reserve - Felsman Loop:  Please meet at the Patricia Drive trailhead.  To reach the trailhead, take Foothill Blvd. west and make a right turn at Patricia Drive.  Continue north on Patricia Drive and the trailhead will be on the left just past Patricia Court.

El Chorro Regional Park:
Entrance is approximately 5.5 miles north of SLO, across from Cuesta College.  Turn right onto park road and continue 0.8 miles to Dairy Creek parking lot on the left by the locked gate.

Irish Hills Natural Reserve:  Please meet at the Prefumo Canyon trailhead.  To reach the trailhead, take Los Osos Valley Road north and turn left onto Prefumo Canyon Road.  Follow this road for 1 mile and the trailhead will be on the left after a bridge crossing.

Reservoir Canyon Natural Reserve:  Please meet at the Reservoir Canyon trailhead.  To reach the trailhead, take Highway 101 north.  Go past the city limits and turn right onto Reservoir Canyon Road (second road past the City limits).  Reservoir Canyon Road will end at the trailhead.

South Hills Open Space: Please meet at the South Hills trailhead off of Woodbridge Street.  To reach the trailhead take South Street east and turn right onto Exposition Drive.  Go straight and the road will turn into Woodbridge Street.  The trailhead is on the right.
