POLICE OFFICER - LATERAL 

SALARY: $4,819 - $6,554/monthly

FINAL FILING DEADLINE: 5:00 p.m., May 13, 2008

The City of San Luis Obispo is currently accepting applications for the position of lateral Police Officer. Under general supervision, the Police Officer performs law enforcement and crime prevention activities, controls traffic flow, enforces State and local traffic regulations, participates in career development, special assignments and performs related work as required. Patrol Officers work a 3/12 schedule

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D.

Graduation from a California P.O.S.T. approved Basic Academy. At least twenty one years of age at time of appointment to Police Officer. Uncorrected vision of 20/100. Corrected to 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other. For individuals wearing soft contact lenses, the "uncorrected" acuity standard does not apply, but vision must be corrected to 20/30 when both eyes are tested together.  The wearer of soft lenses must have at least one year of successful use.  Normal color vision is required. Excellent physical condition with weight proportionate to height as determined by an agility test and an examining physician is required.

Possession of: Valid California Class “C” driver’s license.   Must possess a California Basic POST Certificate (or qualify for one), and be currently employed full-time as a sworn Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff with a California law enforcement agency or possess a current California POST Certificate and been previously employed as a full-time sworn Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff with a California law enforcement agency.  (Out of State applicants with current or previous full-time sworn officer or deputy status may apply with California POST to obtain a Basic Course Waiver to become employed as a peace officer within the State of California.  Applicants that qualify by obtaining a waiver are welcome to apply; however, acceptance of a waiver for meeting the Regular Basic Course training standard is at the discretion of the employing agency.)

Knowledge of: geography and population of the City; the principles, practices, and techniques of police work; basic criminal procedures, patrol techniques, case law, search warrants, investigative and evidentiary techniques; human motivation, behavior patterns and criminal psychology.

Ability to: successfully complete all assigned training and to relate that training to field use; react quickly and calmly in emergencies, make accurate assessments and take appropriate actions; safely and skillfully use firearms and other non-lethal weapons; skillfully gather and preserve evidence, conduct effective interviews, express oneself concisely, and perform Police Officer duties.

Essential Duties: Completes in a proper and thorough manner, all assignments made by competent authority. Responds to situations involving in-progress or recent criminal activity to restore or maintain order and conducts in-depth investigations of criminal incidents. Resolves conflicts of a potentially violent nature involving a wide variety of participants. Observes, reports, and follows up on conditions which pose potential threats to the public safety and health. Provides rescue and first aid services as needed, in keeping with appropriate training.

Other Duties: Provides counseling, referral, and follow-up services to resolve domestic and civil crises. Takes an active role in promoting police community relations and crime prevention programs. Investigates and acts on State and City traffic enforcement. Performs related duties as required.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Oral Interview:  All applications will be screened by a qualified screening board.   Those applicants with the qualifications and experience most closely meeting the needs of the department will be invited to participate in oral interviews.

Physical Agility Test, Polygraph, Psychological & Medical Examinations: Police candidates must successfully pass these examinations to remain eligible in the selection process.

Background Investigation: Prior to appointment, applicants must successfully pass an investigation of their personal history and background to determine suitability for the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
