POLICE CHIEF

SALARY: The current annual salary range is up to $112,200.  Once at the top of the range, it is possible to receive up to an additional 6% of salary through the annual Pay for Performance Plan.

The City of San Luis Obispo is currently accepting applications for the position of  Police Chief.

The City of San Luis Obispo is a beautiful central coast community with a population of 44,600. The San Luis Obispo area presents a unique combination of rural living and a sophisticated cultural environment, enhanced by the presence of Cal Poly State University.   The mild weather, safe neighborhoods and excellent schools make for an unparalleled quality of life that is unique.  The City is the County seat and center of County activity, with a daytime population twice its residential population.  The City strives to continually improve service delivery, not only to the community but also internally among its departments.   The Police Department has an annual budget of $7.8 million and a staff of 90.

WHAT WE WANT

San Luis Obispo seeks a professional with effective, progressive leadership, management and interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely and cooperatively with operational and support staff, other municipal departments, the CAO, City Council and the community. The new Chief will be expected to maintain strong employee relations, be a team builder/player and demonstrate fiscal responsibility. He/she must have a creative approach toward achieving City Council goals. Experience in dealing with the unique challenges of a large student population residing in City neighborhoods is highly desirable.

Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Criminology or a related field, five years of management and command experience in a law enforcement agency and a POST Management certificate. Desirable education includes a master’s degree, completion of a POST Command College program and graduation from the FBI National Academy.

First and foremost, we are very proud of our healthy organizational culture.  High levels of trust and teamwork characterize our organization and the community is very supportive of its City government.  In addition we offer an extremely competitive benefits package that includes, in part, a 3%@50 retirement plan (City pays your 9% contribution) effective no later than March 1, 2003, with single highest year.   The City also participates only in the Medicare portion of FICA and there is no deduction for social security. Annual Salary is negotiable up to $112,200.
