NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR

SALARY:   $4,773 - $5,859 monthly
A $500/mo. special skills pay will be added for those hired with current certification by Microsoft in systems engineering (MSCE).

The City of San Luis Obispo is currently accepting applications for the position of Network Administrator.  The Network Administrator will  provide a wide range of professional support services to City staff in designing, planning, installing, operating and maintaining the City’s complex information technology systems, including network administration, new system installation, strategic system technical support and desktop applications.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education & Experience:

1.      Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology,
         applied technology, business administration or related field; and  

2.      Two years of progressively responsible information technology
         experience, preferably administering Windows Server networks. 

or  

3.       An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of:

1.      Valid California Class “C” driver’s license.

2.      Microsoft Certified Engineer (MSCE) is desirable
        (added monthly stipend provided for this certification)

Essential Functions: Serves as network administrator responsible for documentation, back-up and restoration, security, virus protection, performance monitoring and user access rights.  Troubleshoots problems related to all local and wide area network systems, servers, firewalls, computer workstations, operating and system software and data communications equipment.   Supports users by providing assistance, training and equipment servicing quickly and efficiently with minimal disruption.  Coordinates, schedules, and ensures completion of all production jobs and system back-ups.   Maintains technical expertise and competence by attending classes and seminars.

Knowledge of:  Local and wide area network and data communication systems, including cabling, servers, workstations and peripherals, interface cards, hubs, tape back-up units, bridges, routers, switches, and firewalls.  Network protocols, operating systems, Internet, Intranet, basic web creation techniques and remote access systems.   Relational database system design techniques.  Personal computer troubleshooting techniques, PC hardware and software installation, component-level PC maintenance, Windows operating systems and application software.  Technology support needs for strategic local government applications such as geographic information systems (GIS), finance, public safety and e-government.   Telephony, voice mail systems, and audio/video delivery systems.  Databases (such as SQL Server, Oracle, DB2; operating systems (such as Microsoft Server and Unix), firewalls (such as Juniper); Outlook/Exchange server; routers and switches (such Extreme Networks Cisco) storage area networks (such as NetApp); and Internet/Intranet applications (such as SharePoint).

Ability to:  Be a team player.   Effectively communicate orally and in writing, using technical language appropriate to the audience being addressed.  Quickly analyze and respond to diverse user needs.  Plan and implement complex technology applications and systems.  Independently evaluate complex problems and recommend effective solutions.   Plan, organize, and complete projects in a timely, cost-effective manner.   Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels throughout the organization.  Perform related duties similar to the above in scope and function as assigned.

TYPICAL DUTIES

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do all the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of the class.)  Serves as network administrator, including Windows Servers, SQL Server, electronic mail, Internet/Intranet access, voice mail and telephones. Plans, installs, configures, tests, maintains, updates and troubleshoots network hardware and software systems and applications, including cabling, servers, workstations and peripherals, interface cards, hubs, tape back-up units, routers, switches, storage area network, data communications and firewalls.  Provides systems hardware and software support, help desk services, office equipment, office automation, network management and training.  Plans, installs, configures, tests, maintains, updates and troubleshoots mid-range software, hardware, and peripheral equipment.  Supports strategic systems such as public safety, financial management, geographic information systems (GIS) and document management, and provides technical assistance to users.  Assists with analyzing software and hardware needs; makes recommendations for acquisition, improvements and enhancements. Works closely with vendors for support and purchase of information technology system hardware and software.  Supports users and desktop applications such as Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access. Provides technical support for Internet and Intranet applications. Helps plan and maintain the City’s fiber optic network and infrastructure.  Installs and supports wireless communication applications.  Provides individual and small group training in the use of standard or system-wide applications.  Maintains logs related to installation configurations, inventory, cabling and equipment maintenance.   Undertakes special projects at the direction of the Information Systems Manager.  Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as assigned.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

All applications will be screened by a qualified screening board. Those applicants with the qualifications and experience most closely meeting the needs of the department will be invited to participate in an oral interview tentatively scheduled for June 24th, 2008. The final candidates must comply with the medical standards of the position in order to be designated as qualified for employment. Notices will be mailed to all applicants.
